Hey ya'll, I've come accross a good opportunity to buy a 1982 Dan Smith Strat at a dirt cheap price. The only problem is that the d.b. who owned this guitar before hand sanded off the decal on the headstock, so there's no serial number on it. Everything else that I know about the guitar itselfs checks out from the x-1 switching system to the overall look of the 4 bolt neck and the fact its a butt-end truss rod....but I can't frickin tell what the neck dates say and it's driving me nuts.

Does anyone out there have more information about this specific strat and about how to identify it? I've got pics of the neck and every part of the guitar I could e-mail to you if you're bored and feel like helping this turd out!

Thanks all,

-Jawcali

Sounds suspicious to me. Why did he sand off the decal?

In my opinion, the sanded decal/serial number means either it's fake, or it's stolen. I would probably stay away from it.

Yeah, "stolen" is a good theory.

Does it have the right-for-the-era weird shaped small headstock?

Yeah! That guy is in the LA area!!!...I had him send me a ton of pics on it and everything else checks out, it's weird, from what I've read the Dan Smith Strat is one of the only strats to use the x-1 bridge pickup and you can note it from it's yellow wire...the body looks like it damn well could be that guitar, but the neck is tripping me out!!!

I'm trying to upload my photobucket pics, why won't it let me?

Were there any date tags on the neck. I also have a Dan Smith 82 strat in Sienna burst. I currntly have a Warmouth neck on it, but I have the original neck. I'll post a pic of it for you to compare later.

Here is my 82 dan smith. The serial number is 82,but the date stamp is early part of 83. I photoshopped the last few digits of the serial number. I purchased this guitar back in 83 when I graduated from high school. Parents gave it to me as a graduation gift so we went to GC got it. :) I purchased this along with a Super Champ, the original Super champ, not the XD of today of course:) Anyways, I was stupid for destroying the guitar by modifying it with the floyd rose trem install and routing the body for a bridge humber. I wish I kept it stock.
