Vinny I also spray outside. the dust mask is the same as nothing for what you are doing. You need something rated for volatile organic compounds. in short you need it to have good filters. The dust mask isn't fine enough.

Vin you are kidding yourself, if you think it's safe. You are taking unnecessary risks with your health. A good respirator isn't very expensive.

I say this out of genuine concern for ya.

Let me ask you guys another question you might know the answer to.

I traded an ovation acoustic for a 200 american standard strat. The guitar is in pretty good shape, but has some small scratches, not too deep, just like buckle rash and stuff.

I've I use the rubbing compound on it, will it buff out some of those scratches? or will it make anything worse?

If you can find a strat in yellow that would save you lots of work. All you'd have to do is sand the finish entirely with 400, to let the new paint stick. tape off your details, and spray the black and gray parts.

Once that is done you sand with 400 again up to 2000 then buff with a buffing wheel and compound.

Hey JasonSD why not just get the number 22 in a decal since thats going to be hard to paint. also it would be nice to remove the number if you ever want to sell it.... you still have the cool racing stripes but no number 22.

He just needs to make (or buy,)a stencil, then the 22 will be easy to paint.

One thing I don't get is the way everyone brings up resale all the time. That's the last thing I think about. just do it how you want it!

Well, I wasn't planning on selling it, if it came out good lol. I was thinking of seeing if someone who makes water slide decals can do the number for me. I don't know if the white would be an issue though. I guess if it is, they can make the white transparent and I could paint white underneath before I put it on.

Also I found a possible guitar to use, tell me what you think. It's a Squier Black and Chrome HSS. I found a used one for $115. What do you think?

Here's a link to a picture.

My wife thinks if I buy it I should leave it like it is, cause she likes the way it looks. Kind of defeats the purpose though.
I was looking for one with a small headstock, but I think the painted black will go good with the color scheme.

I might pick it up tomorrow, it's about 1/2 the cost of a new one, but was trying to see what they're selling for on Ebay, but I couldn't find any.

I think that's above my budget for this project. Looks like one sold on ebay for like $500, but If I were going to spend $500 I think I would use this one.

That would be a huge waterslide decal. I think you'd be better off painting the numbers.

I'm pretty sure a commercial print shop can do white on a waterslide decal. But I think it's the wrong way to go. I agree with Twelvebar (earlier) that a simple stencil is the way to do it.

Google "low tack masking film", or find it at a good stationery shop (not expensive). Then find a nice example of a number 22 - you could print one the right size off the computer, for instance. Peel a sheet of that masking film from its backing and lay it over the 22, then cut out the digits very carefully with a scalpel/X-Acto. Then you can peel the film away from the surface with the number and stick it exactly where you want it on the guitar - the tackiness of the film is designed for exactly this type of use.

Spray a couple of very thin coats of paint through the stencil, wait for it to become touch dry but not harden and then peel the film away. Et voila: a nice neat 22 on the guitar - very professional looking.

Cheers - C

I'll look into it. Thanks. So it sticks to a print out of the 22? So under the film is paper?

I think I'm going to get the guitar today. Unless I hear from someone who has a MIM Strat for $125 on Craigslist, I'll get that instead if they call me back.
