Ok, here's something I never do, which is announce a New Guitar. But went to Calif Vintage Guitar and Amp in Sherman Oaks today for the Fender Custom Shop Road Show.

In 1978 I owned a Black on Black Stratocaster which I bought from Don Weir's Music City for 450.00. After some semi-hard times during which I had to put my stuff in storage and also after many moves, lost the guitar. Don't ask, don't know how. I actually kind of hated the guitar. It didn't play very well, lots of buzz the guys at Don Weir never made it right and I was too scared to ask for my money back so I kept it and use LOTS of distortion.

But...I...Loved...That...Strat. Had a great sentimental attachement to it. My first "real" guitar. Looked so cool - All Black Strat.

Well tonight there it was hanging on the wall. A 70s Black On Black Custom Shop Stratocaster Relic Master Built by Mark Kendrick.

Dan the owner made me an offer I could not refuse. I really started to sweat but the guitar played great and he told me that Master Builder Dennis Galuszka would set it up! .

As you have already guessed, I caved.

Not only was Dennis there (and he indeed set it up!), so was Mike Eldred, Todd Krause and John Cruz who Master Built my 60s Shell Pink Strat! Also the head sales guy Joe (unfortunately can't remember his last name) was there. All signed the back of my COA. I really "geeked" out over meeting these guys. I'm not into sports but it was like meeting a great athlete or musician. These are the guys who make my favorite guitars from my favorite company.

The guitar is actually more early 70s than late 70s. Has the 4 bolt neck not the 3 bolt and has the 5 way switch which the early 70s strats did not have. So it's been modernized a bit, but I like the 5 way better and most important it plays like a dream.

To see pics go to the Harmony Central Electric Guitar Forum. It's under

NGD (Custom Shop/Master Built) Fender Custom Shop Road Show

Sorry if I'm not suppose to promote another forum here.

Just want to say FENDER RULES. Thanks guys for making it a great night!

Since this is the Fender Forum didn't think I should discuss price. Can't figure out how to upload pics either. But go to the above link, all questions answered!

Congrats. I'd sure like to see more and better images of that bad boy. It's a Relic, you say?

It is a weird mix of '70s features: 4-bolt, black plastic, bullet. What kind of bridge/saddles does it have?

I've always been fond of the Large Headstock.

Bridge is 6 point

saddles says fender on both sides and slightly rusted

weird mix: 5 way switch. kind of like the best of the 70s strats? On the COA no specific year is given, just says 70s Strat. But boy is it a sweet player. But then again none of my custom shops are dogs.

School me if I need to be more clear on my explanation of the bridge and saddles.

It sounds like the "usual" vintage style trem. I was wondering if it had the '70s style one-piece plate/block trem.

Thanks ... waiting on them better pics!

Thanks everyone for the nice words.

It's 3 days later and still no buyer's remorse. Plays better than 1978.

Now all you need is to put an ebony fretboard neck on that thing and you've got the ultimate black-on-black-on-black guitar! As in "none more black".
My brother had a black on black back in about '78 as well.
