Keep that in mind for the future!

That is exactly why the guy at my local store won. It made all the difference! Most of the others were trying to throw out as many licks as possible in the 3 minutes paying no attention to creating a song and making it interesting. A couple of the other contestants didn't even sound like they were playing to the backing track. The guy who won took the backing track and made it his own.

I'm not sure whether I have a chance in the next round or not, but keep me posted anyway. :)

Congrats TGS!
I hope you win the KOTB contest.

If there is gonna be a KOTB next year, I'm gonna try to sign-up and join. Any tips for preparation?

Ya'll aren't going to believe this, I don't believe this, but I won! :D The competition was stiff, everyone was incredibly good. The judges took me aside afterwards and told me what the main things I need to work on are and they also told me that one of the main reasons I won was that I played a song to the backing track instead of just playing a bunch of licks.

In a couple of weeks I have to compete in the District Finals. That includes pretty much all of South Texas and Louisiana. I can't imagine how good the people are probably going to be there. The winner of the 2007 King of the Blues was from the same store I just won at. Playing in a blues guitar competition in this region of the country is like cooking in a competition in France.

After they announced me as the winner I had a ton of people come up and shake my hand, ask my name, where I was from and ask to take pictures of me. It was really weird. One person even did a mini video interview, in which I sounded really stupid. One person I met was a concert promoter and part of his job is looking for guitarists to play around Houston. He asked if I'd be interested in getting some real gigs, and I really am. So I'll definately be calling him back sometime soon. It would be really nice to actually get to play some blues with a real band outside of my bedroom and the occasional Church BBQ. Right now I just have to sneak as much blues as I can into the music with my Praise and Worship band. It actually works pretty well.

I won a few T-Shirts (all of them were extra large, I'm size small so I gave them to my Dad and brother), a Boss Tuner/Metronome, a pack of ten sets of strings (.10s, but I'm going to trade them in for .11s) and a $25 gear card. The only thing I've ever got for playing before was a meal at a rest home. I'm really glad I got the strings, since they're about $5 a pack and I'm running low on them. And $5 per pack is a lot right now since my Dad has been unemployed since July.

This is a GREAT story..... keep it up.... good luck in the district finals... :D

Texas,
YEEHAAA!!!!   Girl you go. I am so excited for you. I know your parents and brother are proud... Post some videos if you got em.

PS I saw Lincoln Brewster last Friday. If I'm not too old in a few years I could be watching you doing something similar. Use those talents God blessed you with to his Glory and you won't be disapointed.

Thank you so much, that's something I'm going to make sure I never forget or loose sight of.

I was trying to keep my song a secret, but someone else who competed that night filmed me and put it on youtube already. So I guess it wouldn't hurt to show it to ya'll. If anyone tries to copy it, it should be fairly obvious and I have video evidence that I was playing it first.

If it sounds like a mistake or a wrong note, it was. The video my Dad did sounds better and has a better angle, but he hasn't put that one on youtube yet, so this is the one that the other guy filmed. I love the shot where he zooms in on my headstock and it says "Squier" real big on it. I had by far the cheapest guitar of anyone there, even when you factor in the upgrades. Most of them probably would consider a Mexican Fender a "cheapo" guitar.

The judges said I really need to work on stage presence, so if any of you have any advise on that I'd really like to hear it. :)

All I can say is play what you play for a reason. Don't just play licks, make it into a coherent song. The judges said they like that. I sort of based the form of my song on Hide Away, as far as how the parts change. I also tried to incorporate a lot of different styles in there. But I don't know if it came out well enough for you to actually be able to identify any specific influences.[/i]

Congrats TGS!!!
No surprise that you won. Now go out and knock 'em dead in the next round.

When you get famous we can all brag about giving you bad advice when you were starting out!!!

Wow, great job!

2 things - first off, you are a chick, I had no idea lol  and 2nd I thought you would be much older. Not sure why. I just didn't imagine you as a young female! So that makes the win even sweeeeter!

at my local store there was one young kid. He was 16. Not bad. But not that great either. He didn't win.

The guy who won actually played/created a song with the backing track (unlike the rest) and was the only one that got the crowd involved. I think he had a lot of his own supporters there for him. So they were cheering him on like american idol or something.. He was the only guy that got the judges standing and applauding for him during his song. Not to mention a couple tips of the hat from one old timer judge. It seemed like everyone there at the contest knew the guy who won. All the guys from the local Blues scene knew him as well. Including the judges.

For your next round try having some more friends family there to support you. (It could make you more nervous at first but will help in the grand scheme of things) That seemed to help the guy at my store win. The judges seemed to take into account how much the crowd was into it each performer and even more so if the crowd wasn't into it. I would say that the winner at my store was the only one that gave an actual performance instead of just standing up there and played a guitar.

And you guys got it good at your store. Lighting and so on. It looked like an actual stage area in your video. At my store they set up an area with nothing but the big poster that was behind you and 2 amps. It was like any other day at the store with people walking around shopping with all the house lights on making it look like full daylight LOL

Keep us posted and Good Luck!!!

The King is dead, Long Live the Queen!!

seriously, i have played with a lot of people a lot older than you, that make money at music that don't have your chops.

You deserved your win for sure. Nice tune, with form, nice phrasing, not just showing off a series of licks. excellent job.
