There's a handful of "modified" Pewter Pluses which are wired like an Ultra.

Are you saying from Fender or custom work like I do? I have never seen a Pewter Ultra. :?: Not even a Jeff Beck in Pewter that I have seen. Picts???

Not really positive about Ebony on any of these DX American Strats, but I think not. They were close to a Plus but a few things changed that I did not like. I have too say that I have only owned a couple that were from late 1998 to the one pictured below, which was a 2000 model. The cool things about them was the pearl inlay on the neck—something akin to the Ultra. I did like the Chrome FENDER logo on the headstock, chrome DX bridge with pop-in bar, and the Chrome Schaller locking tuners (note: Schaller did make these Chromeface  )

BUT they came with the brittle, bright, Fender Noiseless pickups neck & middle, and Fender’s Colbalt humbucker in the bridge. I liked the bridge sound but frankly, the Noiseless pickups were a turnoff for me. The finish on the neck was also considerably thicker which felt kind-of-weird. SO I turned around and sold these guitars all withing 2 weeks of buying them.

Of course as you can see from the picts that it has many similarities to a Plus—in fact one could say it was an Ultraish DX American Stra!  One of these early ones I picked up came in a Strat Plus case as well! Looked kind of like an Ultra without the flame maple cap. Personally, I still love the Plus series and the Ultras and they are a guitar that was milestone for Fender, especially after the downward direction Fender took in the late late 1970s into the early 80s.

What a silly question

It's your custom work I'm talking about!

Fender never did Pewter Ultras and JB signatures. Pewter was a colour more associated with Eric Clapton in mind.

Humbucker is an Atomic DH-1.

Like i said on another thread anout lace sensors.. the amount of pickup changes since the introduction of the American Deluxe line to present day, verses the adoption of Strat plus in 1987-1999. Fender had it right first time with laces- and the different pickup offerings as you went further up the price spectrum.. If you have to change out pickups that often, one has to wonder if this is a result of anecdotal feedback. ;)

The is something I really like about the look of a Strat without pole pieces on the pickups.

Hi. I'm thinking about buying a 98 Strat Plus, but the private seller is a 3 hour round trip away, and I'm wondering if anybody can tell me what neck shape these Strats had.

I have a 2008 Jeff Beck Artist Series which I believe is a Modern-C neck, and it's a bit bulkier than I like (but the tone of this axe is magnificent). So I'm looking for another great sounding Strat with a neck better suited to me, but also want to avoid a wasted 3 hour drive.

They have a 'Modern C' profile. Some can be a little slim- my Strat Ultra neck a slightly slimmer than the plus, and in the 90's the necks where marginally slimmer than what they are now. You will enjoy it.

I drove 10 hours one way to by the Ultra, and my Plus I bought from Ishibashi in Japan. Don't regret a single thing :)

Thanks for your reply, but that's a bit disappointing. My JB has all the features of the Plus already, but I was hoping to find a smaller neck. I'm pretty sure I won't like it enough to buy it if it's a modern C.

Try it anyway if you can.. A modern c profile is as small as you can get these days, you won't get much smaller in a Fender. 90's Strats had a slightly slimmer profile, but jus enough that you may notice.

Find a Clapton Strat and play it. See if that sleek v-neck suits you. If so, find a used early model with gold Lace Sensors. Minus the roller nut, and the trem setter, and with a blocked vibrato, the Clapton is simply a Strat Plus on steroids with a serious pair of cojones.

I recently played a 2011 American Deluxe at a store, and I liked the neck - it was noticably smaller than my JB Artist Series - but the sound wasn't so great. It's certainly possible the JB I have is not actually a Modern-C but something else instead.

I've been told that and I've been looking, but have been unable to find one. All the local music stores say the same thing: "order it and pay for it, and if you don't like it you have 30 days to return it."

The "cojones" you're talking about are nothing more than the TBX and MDX circuits.

One of the "cojones" has been removed from his personal guitars!

Either keep looking for the off the wall audition, or go ahead and play the '30 day home trial money back guaranteed if dissatisfied gig'. Unless you were playing a 2011 V-neck AmDlx, the stock neck that year would still be a modern C w/a 9.5 radius straight up, It's now a compound radius 9.5-14 if I've got my years of issue correct.
The pickups are now N3's as opposed to SCN's. The latter are opined by many to be superior to the new ones.
