I like the look of the Elite style rubber grip knobs on these guitars. Anyone know where to buy some at a decent price? I found some on ebay, but they're like $10 each and out of the country.

Thanks

NEVERMIND, FOUND A WEBSITE THAT HAS THEM IN PACKS OF 2.

Yes - the old Schaller verses Sperzil issue. It is really confusing and part of it could be explained (do I dare say this???) by the "bin theory"! The first Plus' came with Sperzil and the later shifted over to Schaller. BUT I have seen early 88 and late 87s Plus with Schaller as well. Then each time Fender came out with the next upgraded model, such as the Deluxe Strat Plus after the standard Strat Plus model had been selling for almost 2 years and using Schaller tuners, some of DX Plus' came out with Sperzil tuners for s short time! We see this again with the Ultra guitars. A number of early 1990 Ultras shipped with Chrome plated Sperzil tuners, but all in a very short time moved over to Schaller. Was Fender just trying to use up old stock with each new lease of a product line??? Got me. They seemed to mix and match those first few years.

In this case I would guess that it isn't the "parts bin theory" and more that small orders of Sperzels were used to fill in whenever they ran out of Fender/Schallers so they could meet production demands. More like "Oh crap, those 'Plus series' guitars are really selling well, we're already out of locking Fender/Schaller tuners, Schaller can't fill the our next order for three months, and we have 200 we have to get out by the end of the month" so they would just do a minimum order of Sperzels to fill the gap until their shipment arrives from Schaller.
You would need to pull one tuner and see the guide pin holes drilled on the headstock - Fender/Schaller's use 2 guide pins (on the corners of the tuner body) while Sperzels use one guide pin in the center of the tuner body. If the headstock is only drilled for Sperzels, then a replacement set of Sperzels is the best.

If it happens to have 3 holes drilled (2 for the Fender/Schaller and 1 for the Sperzel) then I would go with the Fender/Schallers just because I've always thought they were a bit smoother - I think the Schallers are 14:1 ratio and the Sperzels are 12:1 ratio. Of course for a guitar of this era I wouldn't use the current Fender locking tuners with the "F" on the knob - they are also great tuners (I have them on my Select Tele) but they would be out of place on a 1990 guitar.

Well. I met the picky Buyer of my 1990 Fender Ultra at "our" guitar tech.
The tech instantly recognized the Sperzels and discounted the peeling
of the two end tuners. Fearing an EBay return, I was relieved, greatly.

But, the picky Buyer complained about the "action" causing some buzzing.
I had not experienced it, but I dropped $40 bucks for a tune-up and wished him well.

Close call with the Sprezels. wwwwhhhhheeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww!!!!!!

Thanks for your help, guys.

ugh...ugh... should I buy this?

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/msg/3240202193.html

I have this thing with Ebony fret boards... i've never played one... but i hear they are the best of both worlds between maple and rosewood. Never knew a strat to have an ebony fretboard...

probably would have to yank those pups out though

Looks nice. About what I paid for my Ultra. I have had ebony fretboards before on some Carvin electrics, and while they are interesting I don't find they add all that much. I have a preference for rosewood going. The pickups on this are very versatile, and I like them a lot. Many options with the switching. Look on Xhefri's Guitar website for a ton of useful info on these guitars. The finish is nice, and the flamed maple is a standout when you get up and play.

I just discovered this forum. It looks like quite a few people are interested in the specifications of these guitars, so I thought I would share the history and specs of my 1990 strat plus. I purchased it new on May 30, 1990 for $599, including the Fender hardshell case (still have the bill of sale). The factory inspection card is dated 5/2/1990 so it must have just arrived at the guitar store where I bought it. It has an E9xxxxx serial number.

The color is gun metal blue with a maple neck. I remember it standing out to me on the wall of the guitar store and still think it's a beautiful guitar.

It has the Wilkinson nut, which has always worked great for me using 10-46 strings. It also has the Schaller locking tuners, which makes string changes very easy. And it has 3 gold lace sensor pickups.

I've never had a problem with the trem system, and the guitar does a good job of staying in tune. The whammy bar is the screw-in type.

Everything is original except for two items that stopped working about 10 years ago: the neck pickup and the mid/bridge tone control. I replaced them with identical parts. Cosmetically the replacement pickup looks a little different from the originals - the label on the newer pickup is indented a little bit on the pickup, I guess to reduce the likelihood that it will rub off while playing.

The white pick guard and the original pickups have yellowed a little over the years, but I like the look of it.

It's just a great sounding guitar that delivers a wonderful variety of Strat tones. And it's really comfortable to play.

I've babied it over the years. It's still in pristine shape - no dents, dings, or scratches - and I hope to keep it forever. What a great guitar!

Well, post some pics :)

I like the Gunmetal Blue too, haven't ever owned one, but always keeping my eye out for one with a maple fretboard. Bid on a few here and there, but haven't found any at a decent price.

It's probably a 1988, but it's still a very nice guitar, and it looks in great shape.

Fender Stratocaster Ultra Plus (rare neck thru body)

It looks like a legit one to me. They were made by the Fender CS, and that looks like a legit early Fender CS logo. Now the tuners have been replaced by recent Fender Locking Tuners - the original tuners would have had a plain locking wheel; they didn't start using the tuners with the "F" on the wheel until the mid-late 2000s (2006/2007 era).

The seller is correct - without the CS certificate the value is less than it should be, and it isn't a complete beater but it isn't in mint condition either.

Yep the Set Neck Strats are real and they were made by Fender Custom shop early on. Some came with Lace Sensors and some had two TX Specials single coils with a Seymour Duncan JB humbucker in the bridge. The serial numbers were wacko on these as well. Fender claimed to start producing them around 1992 and did so for several years, so the E9 serial number could really be late 1991. Lots of nice features like: ash body, highly figured book-matched maple top, set-in maple neck, 22-fret ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, Fender Deluxe vibrato, LSR roller nut, locking tuners, chrome hardware. In 1995 mahogany body replaced ash. This model has an optional gold hardware with Brite White finish as well. Never owned one but will some day.

Set-Neck Strats came also with either a Fender deluxe locking trem or an original Floyd Rose (Set Neck LTD).

The Original Floyd Rose-equipped LTDs were presented with a matching painted reverse headstock. Some sported a pickguard; others had their controls backrouted.

I was at a friend's party a few days ago and ended up talking guitars with one of his mates, I didn't know he played guitar, and turns out he owns a 1994 Strat plus.
He hasn't been playing for some years and he contacted me yesterday on facebook asking me how much I thought he could sell it for.
I see prices online ranging from about 800$ to 1'500$, looks like 1'500 is quite too much honestly...
Eventually I'm going to the guy's place on Thursday to play around a bit with that guitar, I'm quite excited as I've never tried a Plus.
He just sent me a small picture of it, very nice sunburst with a white pickguard and rosewood fingerboard. Seems in very fine condition.
I'm really considering buying it if he doesn't ask for an unreasonable price, I probably don't really need another guitar, but something inside of me is telling me to get it... :P
What do you guys reckon, if it's in a good state, what is the max price I should put for it ?

Talked with my wife and surprisingly she told me I had the right to get it if I wanted too , I haven't asked my Ultra what she thinks about it yet though :P
