Hi Guys,

I have a guitar which I am finding really hard to identify the colour (and to photograph!!!). Dead on it has a light reddish appearance but when you turn it to catch the light it goes very pink. It kinda looks more pink than red and looking around the closest colour I can find to match it is a finish called Razz berry? Have I got this right or am I barking up the wrong tree?

My guess is that this is Lipstick Red. I would encourage you to go to this page: http://xhefriguitars.com/page2.html and scroll down toward the bottom. I discuss the candy colors and their variations—why and how comes... But Lipstick Red and Razz Berry can be pretty close looking in pictures because under different lighting the camera can make the picture not give the true color—plus there are other factors as well, as discussed on that page.

Fender did variations on these too, some have a fine metallic undercoat or even metallic added to the clear coat or even the color coat.

Without reading 600(+) posts,
what is a Strat Plus and a Strat Ultra
compared to normal Strats?

Also, I have seen Elite Strats.

Thanks for getting me current. Toppscore 8)

Go to: http://www.xhefriguitars.com and look at the Plus page, the Plus DX Page and the Ultra page. The menu is on the side bar on the site!

Thanks. Amazing. I went there. Learned quite a bit about the
Plus, Plus Deluxe and the Ultra. I want one.

Question: Is there a side-by-side comparision list of all three guitars
as to which features they do have and do not have?

Also, I went on line to EBay and pointed out many problems
that two EBay listings had while claiming "Ultra" guitars
versus Standard Strats with LACE pickups. Good info.
They were basically the only two or three listed under ULTRA
and they were even true ultras with roller nuts, etc.

Oh, yes. It is great. But you know what I mean by a matrix
with the Strats across the top and the finite number of features
on the left-side column.

It'd be cool.

That would be nice. Maybe you need to embark on the project????

Xhefri's site is awesome. I've looked through it on many occasions looking at guitar porn. In fact, I think I'll go there now.....

Yes. I am at this very moment comparing comparisons between guitars available
on Craigslist and other options. Trying to see if one will fit into my collection.

Xhefri ~ Thanks again for the website pages. Toppscore 8)

Welcome to the Forum Graon. Sweet looking Strat Plus. That finish is what was called Antique Burst, which is very close to the Brown Sunburst they had at the same time. Brown Sunburst had a faint band of red or somtimes even yellow around it as the 2nd color. Thanks for sharing!

Isn't it a 3-Color Sunburst more than an Antique Burst? It' not obvious on my picture above but one can see some red area between the black and brown ones. Check it ou here: http://www.fender.com/fr-FR/support/col ... t&color=27

This first one is Sunburst and the next is Antique Burst. The main difference in the color of the center. Antique Burst is a bit darker and blends in the red band a lot more, often to the point where it hardly can be seen. Sometimes there is no red at all, being just a 2-color burst. Sometimes it is a bit confusing as they can be very close to the same. The Strat Ultra that I use on my Forum signature is Antique Burst, as it said that on the paper work that came with the guitar.

Look at the following picture of my strat which is more relevant than the previous one for color accuracy.

Thank you for your quick answer. Yes, the rubber piece from the 6th string is a little cracked but it currently stays in the nut and there is absolutely no string buzz for the moment. The ball bearing is stable too. I will keep an eye on it.

If I were you I'd be on the lookout for another nut now - that problem isn't going to cure itself. The good news is it should be an easy swap.

Thank you I thought about buying another one...but actually it is not a problem anymore. It works great and stays in tune for a "long" time :)!

Do, ALL Ultras have an ebony fretboard? Any exceptions for Ultras?

Between the Plus, Plus Deluxe, and the Ultra,
which ones and which years did they use the LSR roller nuts?
Were there other factory installed nuts buy other mfgs used?

Were all of the Fender Plus, Deluxe Plus & Ultra guitars made from 1989? to 1999?
None in 1988 or 2000? Please correct me if I am wrong.

If an Ultra or Plus Deluxe has a changed nut, swapped Lace Sensors with a humbucker,
or changed pickups with normal pole magnet pickups while removing Lace sensors . . . . .
Are these items (LSR nut and Lace Sensors) easy to replace?

I have seen the LSR nuts and Lace Sensor pickups for sale on EBay
and many other online sources. Are the new LSRs & Laces acceptable
as replacements in Plus, Plus Deluxe & Ultra guitars? Same specs?

Thanks. Toppscore 8)

Xhefri's the real expert on these but I'll take a crack at answering these for you:

The production spec for the Strat Ultra was an ebony fingerboard. But this is Fender; I'm sure that one or two happened to come out with a rosewood board by accident that made their way through QC - I've just seen too many oddities to say that 100% of any Fender model fits the "official" specs or any rule of thumb.

Fender has used 3 different roller nuts from two manufacturers on these guitars during different time frames - there were two versions of the nut made by Wilkinson and then they used the LSR nut (which is still used today by Fender on some models):

1. Wilkinson Roller Nut version 1 - also called the "Split Nut"; these are wider than the LSR nut and have rollers that the strings go over - there are double rollers for the plain strings (the string goes over the roller at the fingerboard side of the nut and under the roller at the headstock side of the nut) while the 3 wound strings only have the roller at the fingerboard side of the nut. Jeff Beck still uses this version of the nut. Fender used them from the introduction of the Strat Plus in 1987 and were only used for about a year.

2. Wilkinson Roller Nut version 2 - the nut now has dual rollers for all 6 strings. This nut was used on Strat Pluses from say early 1988, Strat Plus Deluxe from it's introduction in 1989, and Strat Ultra from it's introduction in 1990. Fender used these until mid-late 1993.

3. LSR nut - used on all 3 models from mid-late 1993 until they were discontinued.

The Strat Plus was introduced in 1987, the Strat Plus Deluxe in 1989, and the Strat Ultra in 1990. So there were Strat Plus models in 1987 and 1988.

Technically these models were all discontinued in 1998 with the introduction of the American Deluxe series but Fender did make a few of them in 1998-1999 - likely using up existing parts. By 2000 these were completely gone. Also due to a mix-up at Fender some "N9xxxxx" serial number decals - which would translate to a 1999 guitar - were used in 1990 by accident. However, you can tell that these are really circa 1990 guitars because they have the silver modern Fender logo and the serial number on the front of the headstock. A "real" 1999 Fender would have the vintage-style logo and the serial number on the back of the headstock.

LSR nuts are still available - Fender still uses them on American Deluxe Strats with HSS pickups. Now if the guitar should have had a Wilkinson nut you're probably out of luck unless you turn up a replacement on ebay or something like that.

I believe that Lace still makes Sensors to the same specs as they did for Fender, but they will only have a "Lace Sensor" logo instead of a "Fender-Lace Sensor" logo. You would only be able to find "Fender-Lace Sensor" models on ebay. There is also the possibility that none of the current Lace models match up with the old ones used by Fender.

Hope this helps.
