Mystic Black was a color option on the CS version of the JB Strat from that era.

Finally had time to look at it in bright daylight and definitely there's more than black to it, so I guess it must be Mystic Black :)

Ok All: Xhefri's pics of the fine graffiti yellow plus body and subsequent great info on the Jeff Beck story have me thinking about the collectors' and players love affair with the graffiti yellow color. It is indeed a really cool color, I much prefer it with a maple neck. However, there seems to be this theory that graffiti yellow is a rare color, which it may be, but I've seen a ton of graffiti yellow strat plus guitars go up for sale on ebay within the past year, more so than some of the other colors. Almost every ebay descritpion lists graffiti yellow as a rare color. They are still commanding top dollar yet you don't see the same hype of some other colors like candy apple red, lake placid blue, vintage white..etc which I have seen in somewhat less quantities. And graffiti yellow was listed as a standard color in the 1988 Fender catalog. My question is, is graffiti yellow as rare as say, taos turquoise, shell pink, surf green, razzberry and bahama green, colors which you rarely see go up for sale? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I have a theory regarding this question. I have been watching the Strat Plus market for several years as there is a strong personal interest in them, how they sell and buying and selling myself. What I have seen is this: back a few years ago Graffiti Yellow would pop up on eBay, but not real often. Around 3 years ago some guy sold one for around $1200 when other Plus were averaging like $750 to $900 depending on condition and presentation. After that one sold for that much, then within two weeks a couple more were listed. People talk. I remember even reading about this sale on this Forum. So other people who had a Graffiti Yellow Plus then thought they have something real rare. And since then more and more have been coming out of the wood-work. Not all are related to the sale of others people's Graffiti Plus', but many are!

Is Graffiti Yellow really rare? No. But it is more rare than some other colors. As mentioned, more have popped up on eBay because people think they are really rare and with the tight money situation in the US for some people, it is causing more on the market. Same thing happened not long ago with the Razz Berry Plus'. Soon after one sold for a high price then some more showed up on the market. Weird eh?

No doubt in my mind that there are collectors who are eying the 87-90 Plus', especially in the rarer vintage colors, as more collectable and an investment. I have some tucked away myself, as I think it is true. It only takes a few people with some money to start picking up these guitars to drive the market up too. And that has happened. I know some people who have a number of these put away.

Now about rarity. I would say that Taos Turquoise, Shell pink (Dusty Rose?), Bahama Green, Sea Foam Green, Firestorm, Torino Red, Lake Placid Blue, Shoreline Gold, and Razz Berry are the rarest. Next runners up would be Graffiti Yellow, Surf Green, Arctic White, Caribbean Mist, Gun Metal Blue, Lipstick Red and a few other colors. Then there was some real common colors like the Sunburst, Inca Silver in 97 was produced in some high numbers, CAR (except the pre-1990 CARS) is pretty common, as is Midnight Wine, and Blue Pearl Dust and a number other colors not mentioned. On the DX models and the Ultras there is Mystic Black which is not real common and then the Ebony Frost is not super common either (and for some reason not all that popular).

Would be nice if Fender had color production numbers, but as far as I know they don't. Big subject and watching eBay may tell us trends more than production figures! (My point I guess!)

I agree with the theory that the graffiti yellow guitars are coming out of the wordwork because there is an up market for them right now. Starting to see the razzberrys show up now too. Great comments...I see the 87's and 88's really starting to take off a bit on ebay now. We'll see if that changes. They are truly fine instruments. I have a nice CAR 87, I was not sure of the rarity of those on the early pluses. Sure is a pretty color.

Hey nh_strats, the 87 CARs are more rare than the 95 onward CARs. A lot of people mistakenly call the older CARs Midnight Wine, but the truth is it is CAR that has the clear coat yellowing (as many 87-88 Plus' did). Any picts you can post? Would love to see it (And I am sure others would too!) I have a dead mint 87 CAR myself. It is one of the first Plus' to come out as it has a body that has wood screw type bridge posts rather than the brass ferrule type. They used these types of posts on most of the 87 American Standard Strats up till late 87 or early 88.

Speaking of rare colors for the Strat Plus, I forgot to mention Fiesta Red. There were a few of those in 1987-88. Very hard to find. But even harder to find is the twin sister to the Firestorm finish—Icestorm. I think this finish is almost legendary and impossible to find. i just scored this body last night and am eager to get my hands on it. Should be here in 2 days. I started a new thread on this body and will be doing a restoration of the guitar. Anyone else EVER seen one of these? I have not been able to even find a picture of one, till this one.

Just when I thought I had seen them all this one appears. You know what's going to happen now! ... the search is on for it's sibling. Nice score and will be keeping a close eye on the resto thread.

I almost bought an '87 Strat Plus when I got my American Deluxe. It was at a shop in Mississuaga, Ontario, Canada last fall. But on the only day I had to stop in and grab it they were closed for the week while the whole staff went to the PRS factory to gain some product knowledge (they'd just become an authorized PRS dealer).

So I went across the street to the authorized Fender dealer and got an American Deluxe.

I love that guitar, but I often wonder how the Strat Plus would have compared.

Thanks so much! Man what clean 87 CAR! Does your have any cracks in the neck socket? Also check the bridge pins. Some of the very first 87s used wood screw type pins and then later 87s used the brass ferrules in the wood with steel pins that screwed into those. If you have the wood crew type, you have a VERY early issue 87. I have one just like it.

Just picked up a clean Bahama Green Plus too. Pictures to come later. THANKS FOR SHARING!!!!

Getting back to the discussion of rare Plus colors. I find it interesting how colors cycle on ePay! And so many people make statements like, VERY RARE COLOR! Right now (as of today 3/5/12) there are 5 Blue Pearl Dust Plus' on ePay. All rare, of course. But why 5 in one week? And then two weeks from now, there will be 0!!! LOL!

I haven't had the pick guard off of the CAR strat. I don't think it has ever been off. Mine looks like the mate to your CAR with the maple neck, they look like the exact color. I'm guessing you pulled in the Bahama Green rosewood neck that just went on ebay. I just picked up a Surf Green on craigslist, ( pics coming soon) so I restrained from bidding on the Bahama Green one on ebay. Here is the mate to your rosewood one.

I have a new Strat Plus on the bench. This one is in Arctic White. Vintage White and Arctic White get mixed up a lot. The reason is, Arctic White starts out a very white color and then as the clear coat ages, turns a slight yellowish. The Vintage White guitars start out a light creamish color and age to even a darker color. This one is much whiter than the pictures portray but I have an incandescent light on in the room casting a bit of a yellowish hue.
