Hi folks!First time poster. It's great to see a forum of people who love the Strat Plus series of guitars.I've loved the Strat Plus since I played my first one.Love everything about them and especially love the sound of the Lace sensors!I know some people don't care for them but I love the kind of compressed sound you get from the the gold ones.
My number one now is a 1991 model.(Pictures below)I was wondering if anyone here might have a spare original Wilkinson nut?I'm having a slight problem with My E(1st)string.The intonation is voicing a bit flat when up around the 12th fret and the saddle is flat out all the way forward.I'm sure it's the nut.I have a brand new(unused)chrome wilkinson nut but it's for gauge 9 strings and I use 10's.Any help is much appreciated. Many thanks.

I have had a 1989 Strat plus bought it new and still have it. I will upload a picture of it . I dearly love this guitar , I guess it is about mint condition maybe a ding or two but nothing deep enough to remove paint. it has been cared for well . as soon as I figure out how to up load a picture I will . it is a placid blue I think that is the name and a white pick guard with three gold lace sensors . the intonation is a breeze to set and it is truue all the way up the neck.

Great thread! I just picked this one up to add to my collection this week... Been waiting for days to get it in some sunlight for some photos and while it still isn't ideal weather conditions, these should give ya'll a good idea of what she looks like!

I have been a Fender fan and collector for a long time, but admittedly never owned a Strat Plus. I always remembered them being those "expensive" Strats that were out of my reach, and always bought American Standards. I never really gave them much thought until recently when I was looking to buy an early American Standard and came across this perfect Strat Plus...From what i can tell it is likely a 1989, (possibly a '90) and is a total time capsule piece, right down to the perfect original case. I don't think this one ever left anyone's bedroom since new. The gold lettering on the lace sensors is perfect, there is not a nick or even a swirl mark anywhere on the finish, and it looks like it could have been made a week ago.

I'm still not 100% certain what the original color is called... I am almost certain this is what was called "Lipstick Red", as it has a definite metallic/pearl(?) undercoat, and while I originally thought it may be Candy Apple Red, it seems way too bright to be even an unfaded version of that color. I'd be more than happy to hear any ideas or opinions of what the color is called.

In any case, I intend to attept to get some better pics for my website, but for now these will do... enjoy! -Joe

Joe, after seeing these pictures in the sunlight I would say for sure this is Lipstick Red. CAR has way more of a metallic look too it. Super nice color. I have one of these in a Burst with see through Ash on top and back and Lipstick red around the edges.

My CAR Plus, Note the difference?

Yes, I have several CAR Fenders and a few early 2000's "Chrome Red" Strats and both colors are darker. I also have a '91 Midnight Wine American Standard I bought new, and it's darker still...I didn't realize just how vibrant this one was until I got it into direct sunlight and it just exploded with color! Kinda neat to have a full spectrum of metallic red Strats now!

Thanks! I really enjoyed browsing through your site as well!

So now that I'm certain of the color, can you tell me if Lipstick Red is considered a "desirable" color? Was it offered on American Standards as well, or was it a Strat Plus exclusive color? Just curious as I really like it, and can't say I recall seeing too many like it.

Question: What is the difference between "Lipstick Red" and "Frost Red"? I see examples of both on Xhefri's site and they look very similar. Are both actual names for Fender reds, and were they both offered during the same year(s)? The reason I ask is on another site, someone showed me pics on a 1990 American Standard they ordered new in "Frost Red" and the color looks VERY similar to mine. I'm not arguing that mine is indeed "Lipstick", I'm just wondering what the story is on these 2 colors.

I also found another thread on yet another forum from 2008 where at least one person believed Frost Red and Lipstick Red were likely the same color, renamed from one year to the next. I am very curious to know for certain what color my Strat Plus is!

Some of these finished are pretty close in looks. I come from a background of working with auto-body, doing spot repairs, so I did a lot of paint mixing and matching. I set up two mixing rooms in shops. We used everything from DuPont, Martin Senior to Ditzler (now PPG). So I am pretty familiar with paints and types of applications. One needs to remember that many colors on guitars came from cars. And the application process in most cases is pretty identical.

Now with Fender there are so many variables. The mixing of the colors varied some from year to year. The clear coats yellowed and cause the paint to turn darker and often more of a yellow tint. I have see Surf Green that was from a milk green to a darker green. All these tends to create a lot of confusion in identifying guitars colors and even some heated debate. Then add to that that the application process of colors causes the colors to look different. Like a Solid color with a clear coat verses a metallic color with a clear coat. Or a Candy color verses a metallic color. All this affects the looks, of course.

Frost red, from my understanding and from owning a James Burton Tele in that color (see below), verses a Candy Apple Red (see below) or Lipstick Red, there are some differences. Learned some of this from stripping Fender Strat bodies and I could tell what they did to get the look. Frost Red is a metallic paint with a clear coat. I am sure the base coat mix has some pearl in it as will. CAR (Candy Apple Red) is achieved by a fine gold or silver metallic base coat followed by several coats of transparent red, which is then sprayed over with a several clear coats. The number and thickness of the red changes the color, as the more coats applied the darker the color. CAR is very hard to control from guitar to guitar and from year to year due to this factor. Now Lipstick Red is usually a vintage white base coat followed by several coats of transparent red, which is then sprayed over with a several clear coats. So the look is different. It will not have the metallic sparkle too it but will be very deep looking. I swear some looks like it has a little pearl in to as well.

I have notice, after taking a part 100's of Strats, that there was a lot of inconsistencies with the finishes. I think sometimes the guys were in the paint room at Fender in the 1980s and looks at each other and said, "Cool. lets try this!" and did something variant. Like I have a Lipstick Red Burst on Ash. I have only seen a few of these in my whole life. What color did fender call it? I do not have a clue. Was it common? No! I have seen a lot of variations in the Burgundy Burst. To sort this all out is pretty hard at times. Lipstick Red is one of the rarer colors, kind of like Shell Pink or Bahama Green, BTW....

Well if lipstick red is a transparent red with a vintage white base, it would not have a metallic finish, which my guitar has. I was under the impression you believed Lipstick Red was a metallic finish similar to CAR only much brighter. Perhaps it is indeed Frost Red, or perhaps Lipstick Red was sometimes sprayed over a metallic base rather than white? I will say my guitar looks much brighter than the pics of your James Burton tele, even indoors. I'd even say its considerably brighter than the Lipstick Red Strat Plus you sold, based on the photos at least...I agree there are a lot of similarities and variations in these colors!

When I look at your pictures, such as the one below, I do not see any metal-flake or metallic in it at all. I am 95% sure this is Lipstick Red. A very deep, bright red. The color coat / base coat creates a real 3-d look to the finish. Very cool.

Image

Like I mentioned, I have one just like yours in a burst, and the grain of the ash is shown on top and back—very cool. And this very same color as yours on the edges. In fact, now that I think about it, I had another one like it which I sold a few years ago that is on my website. (You can see it below.) There is no metallic look too it, while it is bright and deep looking. The reason I know about the base coat on Lipstick Red being Vintage White was due to having one just like yours, but a bit beat. I took it a part and buffed the body and inside on the edges you could clearly see the white as the guys at Fender buffed through the red finish on the routing of the body. I think I even have picts of that somewhere. When you look at these picts, please consider this is inside and not in direct sunlight. If you could see this guitar outside you would go would know it is the same color.

I agree the photos don't show the metallic undercoat well, and I just tried to take better pics but the camera seems to want to make the photos look like a solid red. I assure you I know what metallic is, and when standing in front of this guitar it is obvious the undercoat is a metallic, most likely a bright silver...and the red/clear is on top of that. it is 100% without question NOT a solid red, and the red is not opaque. The color under the transparent red has a definite metallic to it, the same way you can see the metallic color on a Candy Apple Red finish, except the red is obviously much brighter. I'd bet my last dollar the basecoat under the red/clear is a metallic and not vintage white. I wish I could get this to photograph better, but my camera is a 15 year old 2.1 megapixel Sony.
