The Fender Stratocaster book by A.R. Duchossoir has a pic of a set neck guitar that looks like an ultra. I don't know if the fretboard is ebony though, cause the photo is in black and white. It doesn't say if it was a CS model or just a retail model so I don't much more about it.

Does the guitar you cite have a black painted headstock?

I suppose you mean this one:

Random question for you guys. I was talking to my dad and he mentioned that he saw someone selling a Strat Ultra on ebay with a set neck...like through the body neck. Did these ever exist or could they have been some sort of CS ultra? I've never heard of them before.

Just to add to the other posts there was a CS "Set Neck Stratocaster" from the early 90s that was essentially a set neck Ultra. The one I saw at a shop back in the day (pulling up a memory from say 1992 here) was made like the one Chromeface posted but was in a natural finish so it had a natural headstock; it also had the chromed Wilkinson nut like the early Ultras. Unfortunately I can't remember if it had a rosewood or ebony fingerboard. I believe these were made from say 1992-1995 or so before they were replaced by the CS Showmasters.

Also on a semi related note, he also mentioned seeing a telecaster Plus with an ebony fretboard. I just bought a nice Don Grosh guitar off ebay but the neck isn't quite what I'm wanting....I've had my eye on a Tele Plus for a while but that dang guitarist from Radio Head has made the prices go out the roof! An ebony version would be pretty sweet

I don't remember seeing any Tele Pluses back in the day with ebony boards, although some of them that I saw had really dark rosewood boards. Of course with Fender you just never know.

Yeah the one in the book is a lighter color. I've seen a few on ebay and they've all been the same color. And I think the fretboard was rosewood.

Hi Plus & Ultra fans,

I'm interested in any modifications people have done to their Ultra's.... I'm not into customizing just for the sake of it, I'm looking for useful mods.

Ive got an Antique Burst Ultra.... its easily the most played-looking one that I have seen. Its served as my primary guitar for 17 years.

Ive moved the volume control down 1cm and moved the pesky 3 way switch diagonally right towards the bottom tone control. I find this switch is the only feature that is a problem. Even after moving it I still hit it accidentally every so often. So Ive had it... I'm thinking about replacing it with a 2 way button from the Jeff Beck model & consequently rewiring the red dually so that only the pickup closest to the neck is useable. I find the bridge single coil pickup configuration too glassy or thin for my use. What do you guys think of this idea ? It can easily be put back and I'm not going to sell this guitar anyway. Am i the only one bumping into this thing ?

Also, I just bought a blue burst ultra and I looking to fit at least a new bridge pickup if not others.... Im thinking about a Seymour Duncan Custom SH-5 - "P.A.F. on steroids - loud and proud" though a more standard PAF like pickup (in white) may be preferable. Maybe thinking to team it with another in the neck position or maybe just leave two single coils but maybe try Fender noiseless here...... ??????

I'm interested to find out if other pickups are better than the lace sensor on this model. I don't have enough experience with other pickups to be sure, but plenty of critics seems to dislike the lace. I think they are pretty good actually - maybe fall down a little on the out of phase sounds but are still not terrible. Any opinions here ?

Any suggestions on the pickups is much appreciated....

Anyone change the Wilkinson nut for a standard nut? Got a photo you can post ?

Hope to get some feedback from you guys.

And xhefri if you are reading thanks for putting up your informative website !!

Thanks,
strontium.

OK here is a pic of my ultra antique burst with modified volume & switch locations.

BTW, I have a new pick-guard, 2 new pickups & new plastic for vol/tbx controls so all the whites will match up once fitted. I had to put a new dually in so that stands out as new.

Also, I switched the TBX control to the middle & the tone to the bottom location. Anyone else do this ? I use TBX more.

I've been on the hunt for a well playing tele for a few months now and have considered just tweaking my Ultra to get more of that sound instead of buying a whole new guitar (Tele plus is what I"m looking at but they are super expensive).

I've heard a lot of great things about the Lindy Fralin pickups that are coming on many of the boutique guitars. I've also been tempted to buy one of the Dimarzio Area Prewired setups: http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/pre-wir ... -pickguard I've heard nothing but good things from those who have replaced their strats with those pickups.

Let me know what you wind up doing and if anyone else here has tried the two options above. And Strontium, can you not find a new pickguard that doesn't have predrilled holes in it? That is looks outrageous!

Quick update. I actually caved in and bought the dimarzio pickguard I referenced above and installed it. The sound of the strat def now has more of a 'traditional' tone to it that is more jangly if that is a word. The response seems more dynamic and overall it sounds more like a standard stratocaster with the obvious better feel that the Ultra is known for.

I grew up with the Lace Sensors and still really love that sounds as well...so I'm not sure which pickups I actually prefer yet. The Ultra is now way more bluesy than the compressed/bell type tone it had with the LS.

I am having a strange problem with some harmonics though...most notably the one at the 4th fret 3rd string. It's almost impossible to hit it cleanly now when it used to be super easy (I've changed a lot of adjustments with the guitar too). Anyone know if a poor open harmonic can be a result of pickup changes or more than likely something wrong with the setup? I've been listening to a lot of Jeff Beck recently and it kills me to loose some of those non 5/7/12 harmonics like the 4th fret ones. Any idea on what could be causing this?

Just lowered the pickups all the way....that's not the problem.

I did try a slight micro tilt the other night (1/4 of a turn) and I just reset it to its not affecting position and that def added a bit of tone. It seems like the micro tilt was adding just a tiny bit of fret buzz to mid neck notes.

Still not sure why that 4th fret harmonic is so weak. Just plugged up my tele and it's screaming....I know this strat ultra should out do the tele with that note.

I am assuming Mystic Black - based on what I have read on Xhefri's Guitars. It looks black, but is really a dark green with metal flake. Beautiful...

Ah, davidwhitson, you assume right. This is for sure Mystic Black, Fender color code "19". Kind of wish I would not have sold mine...ummm kind of wish i would not ahve sold a lot of guitars! Nice to see this thread is still going. BTW, will be posting a bunch of new stuff on my Plus page of the website. A new section on E4xxxxx plus with pictures and if I can finish it, a picture of almost ever Plus color. Stay tuned! :D

Any idea where you can buy replacement screws for mounting the Wilkinson roller nut? I need to replace one and it looks like a phillips head sheet metal screw between #2 and #4 (not sure anyone makes a #3) at 1/2" length. This one has a bit too large of a head but the #2 is barely too small.

Wonder why I no longer get notification emails when someone posts on a thread I have been posting on? Did something change in the use prefs? Here are a few new ones, 1987 models:
