Hey guys, this is my first post and wanted to thank everyone for such a great and long thread about one of the best guitars I've ever owned.

My father bought his Ultra back around 89-91 well before I ever started playing guitar and to this day it's the best guitar I've ever played. I've mainly been playing the Les Paul they bought me for my 21st birthday and I figured it was time to buy another strat before my 30th birthday next year. So here is the Ultra I just bought off ebay; can't wait to get it as I'm a bit anxious it can't match my dad's guitar....I'm hoping all these Ultras are very very similar.

Now since there is already a Strat Ultra in the family and I grew up with the sound the Lace Sensors have I am already toying with the idea of changing out pickups on my new ebay ultra. I just watched a demo video on youtube showcasing the new Noiseless 3 Pups with the S1 switching found in the American Deluxe Strats. I have to say was pretty impressed with how easy the setup was and how many tones this already versatile guitar can get with the S-1 switch.

Has anyone else replaced the lace sensors with the N3 Pups in their Ultra and is it worth buying one of these pickguards assemblies to install into this new guitar? I'd normally be happy with the Lace but since I know these guitars play super smooth and fast I'm down to try a completely different set of tones on this amazing guitar. Anyone bought one of these off ebay?

Nice score. I was watching that Ultra on eBay BTW. Welcome to the forum! I am not a big fan of the N series pickups, but then everyone has different tastes. The S-1 is pretty cool though. The Ultras have such a broad tonal ability that they are hard to beat. I have owned many Ultras and also have built custom Plus' wired like an Ultra. Check out these two pages:

Speaking of news guitars, check out my latest Strat Plus. This is a very early issue 1987 Surf Green Plus. The guitar is dead mint, with even the finish on the fretboard being untouched. Fender finally released these in the late fall of 87. This one has Dec 4th, 1987 written on the heel of the neck.

It also has the Sperzel locking tuners and the Split Wilkinson Nut. Some people love this color, other do not, but this color, Graffiti yellow, Shell Pink, Razz Berry, and a few other solid colors are becoming very collectable in the 1987-88 Plus line.

Any of you guys fans of the Telecaster Plus? I don't see much about those and they seem really tough to find used. I kind of just bought the above Strat Ultra to hold me over while I look for a nice Tele. I'm thinking though if the Strat Ultras are so nice then the Tele Plus should be a good guitar as well. I just don't like the look of the one with the humbucker and it seems to be the more popular version.

Nice Green Plus there too. Very Beck-ola la la

for the lovers of this model....

my buddy just recently, had a mint, blue burst and he let it go to GC for $350...
Year 1989 if I recall.
I didnt buy it an had no money. Reason for selling it = he had so many other gits and this wasnt a favorite.

but anyway, on the bright side.. some lucky stiff got a mint, blueburst +10 shape for $350.

Wow I have not posted on here in a year due to some unforseen circumstances but see Xhefri is still rolling with this thread as he is hands down the guru of the Plus-Ultra guitars. How have you been Xhefri? I can remember writing to you on ebay to get your butt over here as everyone was talking about your secret mods lol. I dont understand why someone would think $1,800 is too much money for an Ultra when they sold for that price new and are one of the most solid and beautiful Strats ever produced outside of anything from the CS. I am still wondering where they all are since you very rarely see them come up on the re-sale market especially all original. I still think everyone has theirs hidden under the bed. Here is my baby in Blue Burst, that is just the flash as she is clean as a whistle. This Strat can just about do it all, I had written so many threads over the years as this is the one ax I would love to see re-issued,or even tweaked in a version for metal and heavier music as it would be the perfect choice.

I believe this guitar was used by Jeff Beck before he got his signature model with the humbucker and the fat baseball neck a couple of years later.

The Jeff Beck Strat in all its guises is available only with a rosewood fretboard though I saw Jeff playing a couple of maple-neck Pluses a couple of years before his signature guitar being released in 1991.

The American Deluxe HSS has a compound radius neck which is very comfortable and makes bending and chording a breeze. Also, the guitar has a special raw switch which routes your signal to the humbucker no matter any pickup position you're using and bypasses the whole circuit.

Mr chromeface, sometime show us some of "your" guitars. I know you pull a lot of research off the web and share that, but I would be interested in knowing a little bit more about you and your guitars!

All original 1991 Ebony Frost:

1994 - not sure I can actually call this an Ultra. The Blueburst body and pickguard were destroyed, so I purchased a new pickguard from Xhefri, and used a 1994 Plus body in Midnight Wine. Everything else is correct for an Ultra, though:

2001 American Series Aquamarine Metallic - it's not a Plus, but it thinks it is...

What do you guys think the demand on these guitars will be in a few decades? It seems to me Fender went through a really bad period in the 70s-80s with very few guitars being sought out by collectors. All I've lived and known has been the Fender Ultra because I was born in the 80s but from reading people swear the Ultras and Pluses were some of the best guitars Fender ever made even when compared to some Custom Shop guitars.

I guess there is no real way to answer this question until we see the demand go up. I think my dad paid $1200-$1600 for his new back in 91 and I just got a near mint used one for $900 so we obviously aren't quite there yet. I do hear the lace sensors are going up in value quite a bit though. Any thoughts?
