Hi, another Kiwi here!

Unfortunately I don't own a Plus anymore but I'm really enjoying the stories and photos.

I bought my first late 80's Plus in '91 at the Rock Shop in K Rd,Auckland costing about $NZ900. Maple neck, dark grey/blue-ish metallic finish (I always thought it was called gun metal blue). I loved that guitar so much, and so did everyone that played it (photos to come). Unfortunately it had to be sold to fund my OE in '94. Strangely the guitar was for sale on Trademe recently in a very sad state for a very high price $1500. I was tempted but it would have needed a lot of work.

My second Plus was bought new in Perth in '96, black with Rosewood neck, schaller tuners. As nice as it was I didn't love it like the first.... must have been the neck. I kept this one for a bit longer but was sold to buy a house in 2001.

One day I'll buy another, probably from the US when I visit the in-laws. In the meantime I'll keep dreaming, and play the Squire Tele custom that get the job done.

Matt

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum! Nice to see a Kiwi here- would be cool to see your old strat if you have the photos.. You are right that Trademe prices are fairly unrealistic but sometimes there are bargains to be had. I think I may remember seeing a plus that was worse for wear a while back- the guy was wanting a lot for it considering its condition

Yes, I think you probably saw the same guitar:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =358797642

$1700 and in very poor condition. He's dreaming! A real shame as I would have loved my old guitar back.

Will get photos up soon.

Cheers
Matt

I have a '91 Plus Deluxe. I think its called Blonde Ash. I'll post some pics when i get it back from sam ash for a setup. I've had it since Nov. '91. I was 16 and it's been my only ax since then. It has a few scars but still jams and I love it. Been looking for a Plus for a while.

Have any of you come across any good videos with people playing Strat ultras? I'm curious to hear the different tones people can get out of these guitars:

Here are a few I've found:

1) There are several good videos of Chris Crocco playing a strat ultra. Amazing jazz tone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPEtMJ4hbrg

2) Here is a video of The Breeders playing live. There are two ultras in this video, but only one is being played. Kelley Deal plays a Crimson Burst, but I'm not sure what color the other one is (anyone know?). Also, Kelley's sister Kim Deal (The Pixies) plays a Blue Burst Ultra. I have seen photos of it, but haven't come across any videos of it yet.

3) Here's another example of a nice jazz tone:

I'd love to see others if people have found any good ones.

Well, I found this video while watching that last video in the post above.

The guy thinks he has an Ultra, but it looks like a modded Plus Deluxe to me. I posted some comments but don't know if he'll read them.

Strat Ultras used to have ebony fretboards.

I never saw an "all-maple neck" Ultra before, even in the rare teal green transparent finish which enhances the striking visual appeal of the instrument.

Normally, teal green was offered only on the American Deluxe models made between 1998 and 2006*, though I suppose a small batch of Pluses and Ultras were available in that colour.

(*2004-2006 FSR versions only).

Xhefri,

Watch this video

Guy says it's an ultra, I posted a comment on Youtube saying it wasn't. He posted back with that comment above.

Jason, your right, it is a Strat Plus that someone put on a "built" an Ultra type pickguard setup. Wrong type mini-switch (Fender never used the butterfly handle mini-switches_ and it is in the wrong place. it also has 4 screws holding down the red dually, Fender used 3 screws to hold that down. Also it has an ASH top (such as seen on a DX Plus. Non-chrome parts and a Maple neck! Definitely not a Ultra. Sounds like you took your comments kind of personal! Too bad.....

yeah I pointed all that out to him, even the switch type, and the neck plate. Also I doubt fender took custom orders on any of the Plus line.

And I wasn't trying to be mean to the guy, but maybe it came across that way. Just pointing it out, but the guy sounds kind of snobbish in the video and the video is titled Fender Strat Ultra - The Real Deal so I had to point that stuff out lol.

I read all you wrote and then left a comment myself. Some people just do not want to give up their preconceived ideas.....I means he starts out saying "this is a REAL Strat" like there are very few on the planet....... LOL. Now this is a real ULTRA

Yeah. I had seen it. That's why I asked if people had found any good videos. j/k :)

Here is a better view of one of the strat ultras used by The Breeders. It's pretty road worn. What color is this? I've never seen any with that green.
