Hey Xhefri:
The only real '87 is the sea foam green, the sunburst and graffiiti yellow are real early '88's and the Raspberry (yes it is raspberry) is a late '88. I'm partial to the split nuts but I really wanted the raspberry one which plays very nicely. The Sea foam '87 has a rather skinny maple neck and is very light next to the other raspberry maple neck.

Very cool. Ya a lot of early 88s were like the 87s. The Raspberry is called, by Fender Razz Berry. Pretty rare.

Hello everyone. First timer here on the Fender Lounge.

I loved this thread and decided to register to share the looks of my own Strat Plus.

Image

I bought it around 2002. It is a 1991 model. The hardware is all Sperzel, but I read somehwere in this thread it is Schaller because of the year? Can anyone confirm that?

I had it 'retired' for the last two years because my main amp, a Marshall DSL401 was out of order and it just didn't sound right with my backup amp, but I decided to ressurect her and sent her to a tech to have the frets restored and to wire a Eric Clapton Mid Boost with her TBX tone control.

I installed a pearloid pickguard to give it a new look. I think it will look amazing with this colour.

I also 'blocked' the trem system like Eric Clapton because I don't use it anyway and I like the more solid feel of the strings as in a Les Paul.

I only saw one guitar in this thread that looked like mine and you guys called it "Midnight Blue". I am pretty sure mine is more of a "Sparkle Purple", but I couldn't find any mention of it. Depending on the light, the purple can get kinda blue-ish, but it is definitely a solid purple.

Here is a picture of a friend playing it.

Can anyone enlight me as to what is the official name of this colour?

I am not sure what you have there as far as a color. There was a fairly rare (and I think special order0 Strat plus in Burgundy Mist Metallic. Here is one I customized into a Ultra type configuration.

But your guitar does not look like that. Midnight Blue is a very deep dark blue. In fact in regular lighting it looks like a dark navy blue. But in sunlight it can have a very deep look since it is a candy color. It could be your Strat was one of those odd one they messed with in the paint shop. I have seen a few red and Crimson bursts, some in metallic and some not. Also it could have been ordered with the Sperzels or they were replaced because but 1991 fender had pretty much moved over to the brushed Schaller. Never did understand why the change.

Almost looks like a Trans Blue Burst that I once owned, but not quite.

JasonSD Strat is a great example of a Midnight Blue. The difficult thing is, depending on lighting and the white balance setting on the camera you use, you can radically change the looks of the color. Midnight Blue is like Candy Apple Red in application. It is a fine silver or gold base coat followed by several transparent color coats (in this case blue) and then clear coated. The color can vary based on base coat color, and how many color coats are applied. Fender did do odd things like add sparkles in their clear coat. I have own the Jhade Green Strat Plus and it was a black with a green sparkle in the clear.

I have told this story before on this Forum thread and showed this picts. Several years ago I had a Midnight Blue Plus that had some bad chips in the finish. I decided to strip it down and do a refinish on it. I found out two things. 1) Candy colors are very hard to strip as the fine silver metallic coat is very hard to get off. 2) Sometime a Strat can come from the factory with a lot of coats of paint. See the guitar below. This Plus had Midnight Blue (MB) and then Candy Apple Red (CAR) and then another CAR, then MB with a sealer coat (each color had the base coat and color coat) and then 2 more MB coats with base and color and then the first sealer. Wow, talk about a THICK SKIN guitar! What in the world was Fender doing when this happened. The paint had to be at least .5 mm thick.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

My Strat defintely has sparkles layered down over the purple paint. It is discreet, but does look wonderful indeed. That's why I wanted to install a pearloid pickguard. It will make a great match I assume.

About the hardware, so, as stock back in 1991 it already sported Schaller hardware? That's really strange!

Anyway, like many of you here, I got into a second hand shop in my area decided to buy an American Standard. I tested two models and although I always seen the Plus hanging on the wall, I never really tried it until that day.

I played both Am Stds and they were humming all over the place as soon as I plugged them onto my Marshall. Then I decided to try her just for the sake of comparison. It was quite a bit more expensive than the others, but she had me from the first chord!

I am a tuning freak. I have two Epiphone guitars, a LP Std and a Sheraton II and I had them totally redone as far as hardware go, including locking nut (Gotoh), roller bridge (Schaller) and fine-tuner tailpiece (Gibson) because I could not stand their inability to stay tuned.

I solved that pretty much, but I know I will always find guitars with a chronic problem, especially in the G string, to detune after a heavy bend or stuff like that.

The Strat Plus solved all my problems at once because it had locking tuners, roller nut, trem-setter and a great bridge all stock. The guitar NEVER goes out of tune. Having that, it was easy to decide after listening to the Lace Sensors great and silent tone.

In your site you talk about the Jeff Beck signature model in MIDNIGHT PURPLE. Could it be it? But my guitar hasn't any sign of being signature.

Also, the bridge and tuners are Sperzel or Schaller? I forgot about the Wilkinson nut...

I found his picture in another forum and I'd say this colour looks almost exactly like my guitar (I could be wrong though).

Daniel Gallagher is right, Midnight Purple is a colour which was closely associated with Jeff Beck for nearly 10 years.

If you ever find out for sure what color your Strat is, please let me know. I try to keep up on all the variations in the Plus line and there are still a few colors that stump others and myself. Maybe body swaps, or special ordered, or someone was smoking something who was working in the paint room at Fender (or was not wearing a paint mask??? )
