Was Torino red only used on the EC strats? Or was it available on other models?

It came on some of the Strat Plus Models, vintage reissues and some American standards back in the late 80s and early 90s. I have seen a few Plus' in that color.

Sorry, but I have only owned one of that color and that was a long time ago. It is a solid color and slightly oranger than the bright reds like Lipstick or CAR. Check out: http://www.fender.com/support/colorchart.php?show=red&color=42
I tend to think some of these colors were that same but were given different names over the years. Like Chrome Red and Frost Red. CAR can age or have more coats of red and look just like Candy Cola. My 87 CAR Plus looks more like Candy Cola! Check out the color chart. Pretty helpful but then again, colors can age, vary with pigments, color coats, etc.!

Good point, Candy Cola looks like midnight wine in some examples! I have seen so many different variations of CAR that Ive come to the conclusion that it varies depending on year, what plant it was made, the type of undercoat etc... I think it looks nicer with urethane instead of nitro. I guess I have seen deeper reds done that way.

I knew a builder on the north shore of Auckland "who knew a guy" who sprayed the nicest CAR he ever saw. He told me that he actually srayed a metallic red with a lot more metallic flake than normal, and gave it many coats. He reckoned the more coats sprayed, the 'deeper' the metallic look. Then it was given a few top coats of clear. He was from California, and he taught my friend to mix colours well. I seem to remember him saying he did an apprenticeship in a paint shop and went on to work at Fender before settling in NZ years after setting up shop to do guitar repairs. I think his name was Zel Thaite from memory- maybe I should try and look him up :P

Cool. Ya CAR depends a lot on the UV affect on the clear coat and how many color coats they put on. I use to operate a custom paint shop doing vintage, classic and street rods, so I had the opportunity to spray CAR a number of times. The way most CAR finishes are done is to lay down a fine silver coat, followed by a transparent color coat (in this case red and most typically with no metal flake in the color coat.) and the some clear coats. Colors such as Midnight Blue, CAR, Frost Red, Candy Cola, Chrome Red and a host of some other colors are applied this way.

I know I posted these pictures before on this thread, but at this juncture it is a good time to show them again. This was a Midnight Blue Plus that I stripped. The first picture shows it with the clear and the Blue coats off and up against the hard to remove silver base coat. As you can see it had a clear coat and then transparent blue with a silver coat. BUT, Fender messed up somehow and painted this body around 6 times in the Candy Color Concept (I think I just came up with a new phrase. 3Cs! But candy is always used to refer to a sliver base with transparent color coats, thus giving the finish a very deep "candy" look.) It started out as Midnight Blue, then refinished as Midnight Blue again. The resealed in black and then Midnight Blue again (each time with the silver base coat followed by the transparent color coat) . THEN they switched to CAR. Not once , but TWO TIMES! and then back to Midnight Blue! When I got it it had some nasty chips and the chips were really deep. When I started to strip the body, it was like, WOW. THICK FINISH and very hard to cut through the silver base coats as they contained a lot of very fine silver flake. The stripper had a hard time loosening it up. Check out the picts:

I had that one midnight blue and I didn't really dig it. I bought the loaded body off ebay and it looked more blue and metallic in the pic, but when I got it it was more purple, and looked more solid. Only looked metallic in certain lights.

Here's another one (I think is midnight blue) for sale here for $650. I would of probably bought this if it was a different color.

I think your right Jason. Looks like MB too me. I never really dug MB either. It was too dark to take advantage of the Candy effect. Candy is a very subtle color as the flake, most of the time (and I say that as some Burgundy Mists use the Candy Concept but also add flake in the color or even clear coats) lays under the color coat. So the color has a deep look with light silver sparkles underneath. When CAR became popular in the 60s and 70s, people saw it gleaming in the sunlight and just simply went WOW! And guitar companies always followed in the footsteps of the auto industry. Check out this simple link about CAR:

The EC Strats come in Candy Apple Green AKA 7-up and it is applied in the same manner. I remember when there was a crazy on for Candy colors in the late 60s early 70s, CAG was really popular for street rods. Then CAR became a craze. A lot of 62 Tele Customs with the double bound bodies came in CAR, as I am sure you know. How many guitars do you have right now Jason? You sure have a nice collection of stuff you post!

I'm collection is small compared to yours. You can probably have more guitars than me if you put those parts of yours together that you had in that one pic lol.

I sold a 2005 american standard when I bought that silver blue-ish strat plus.

So I have 8 strats and 1 bass. The pic of the tele I posted isn't mine, I just wanted it when it was for sale. lol

My current guitar that's getting all my time is my black mexican strat that I put a MIJ 54 reissue neck on. I love that neck. I'm trying to make it look like a 56 strat. I want to redo all the wiring to cloth wire, throw some CS fat 50's in it, and a old brown chciklet type cap in it. I found a site that makes a reproduction of the cap, but I'm now sure how a cap with that value sounds and it cost like $25, so I don't want to buy it and not like it.

I have to wait to I get some spare cash for all that too. And eventually I would like to swap out the body with like a tex mex strat body. Something with an american vintage bridge.

 It looks like they were hoping it would survive a nuclear winter!

Thanks for the info- Ive learnt something about Candy Colours. It seems like after a while, you begin to think all topics have been covered on this forum, it gets a little boring, then whamo!! someone blows you away with something you didnt know :D

I must have a look at my deluxe as it is Candy Tangerine, it would have been finished the same way. Perhaps someday I wouldnt mind doing a build like your blueburst plus w/ultra wiring- but in candy tangerine. I think it would actually look good :)

Eight Strats and one bass? That is way more than a lot of guys! but the question is, Has it quelled the GAS????   I am sure GAS is a pretty hard to cure sickness, that only a wife can help some guys get over. Like "If you buy another guitar," she says with a fevered pitch in her voice, "I am out of here!" Man, if my wife EVER said that, I sure would miss her.....good thing she likes my guitars.... :P :P

Ya, guys talk about "thin skin" guitar finishes. When I saw this I was like, how could they get the neck to even fit, then I looked closer and saw they actually rerouted the neck socket to take off the paint so it would.... Funny thing is, when I played it, it did not seem dead or any less resonate! Like you, I keep learning a lot on the forums, espcailly when I read Ceri, Andybighair, or Ninjis's posts!
