No, the Lipstick red had silver underneathat least mine did. And the color was almost like Clapton's Torino Red.

I was told the Lipstick Red was a solid color.... I have back shot of this and it looks deep read like the body that has the vintage white underneath. When you got your guitar was there a Fender tag that gave the color and #code? Here is one I had:

James Burton Signature Telecasters were done the same way as the CAR with silver underneath, but a little lighter red, called "Frost Red":

No I got it used, and the guy told me it was CAR, but I said it was too bright to be CAR. It looked like a solid color, I really could only tell the undercoat had some metallic cause of the chips.

Yours is in nice shape for a 87-88! If this was a solid color it would be Lipstick Red or the more pinkish dark red is Razzle Berry.

It must be the Lipstick Red, there's no pink at all in the color. Looks like I got a [/i]real closet classic, there is no fret wear at all, and no dings, dents or scratches. I have not pulled off the neck yet, but it does have one of the left over serial numbers E4+xxxxx. Hey, how many times you see something like this? http://www.gbase.com/gear/fender-strat-plus-1984-1#

I see these fairly often. Wow that Plus is dirty! Unlike yours! CAR is an interesting color, as it really does not have metal flake in the color or clear coats. It is done by putting down a silver metal flake base, first and then coating it with a transparent red, with several coats and then clear coated over that. That is why the colors can vary so much because 3 coats of the red color coat will be lighter than 4. Then the clear ages and darkens up too. Look at your guitar under direct light and see if it has some sparkle. If so it would be CAR. If not, and is a plain solild bright red, then it would be lipstick. Fiesta Red is a bit orange-red....so not that for sure.

Mine does have a nice sparkle under lights and looks more like the right one in Jasons side by side shot.
That black one you put together looks sweet, how's the other one coming along?

I have always thought any Red Strat with the Silver/Transparent Red/Clear coat was either CAR or Frost Red. CAR can vary in lightness or darkness by the number of red coats or how much the clear has yellowed with age. Lipstick Red, I was told be a Fender rep years ago, was a solid color, but I tend to think it is the same as CAR but with a solid White or Vintage White base coat. Here is my Lipstick Red Plus. I know for certain this one isLipstick Red and did does not have any silver metal flake in it at all and is very deep dark red:

Go to my website: http://xhefriguitars.com/page2.html And that page will pretty much clear it up. Page 3 is the Plus DX and page 4 is the Plus Ultra. Newbie questions are always welcome! :)

Depends on model type, color, etc. But Between $750 and $1000. It is a bit of a buyers market right now and there are some good deals floating around.

Ok, I found the odd CAR body pictures. I wish I would have snapped a few of the trem cavity and the inside under the hood, as you could clearly see the vintage white finish with the transparent red coats on top. I sold this loaded body on eBay about a year ago due to the chips on the back. But if you look carefully of the pict of the back, round the screw holes for the neck plate, or on the inside of the neck socket, you can see the vintage white paint. Wonder if this was Lipstick red? It looked very deep and blood color....

What about Torino Red? I was always though lipstick was metallic or a pearl red. Torino red as I understood (I could be totally mis-informed) was much darker than Fiesta Red, and was indeed a flat colour

Was Torino red only used on the EC strats? Or was it available on other models?
