My '96 Deluxe Strat Plus originally came with red/silver/blue FLS pups. The blue was too p90-ish and the red too humbucker-ish. Soooo...
I moved the silver FLS to the bridge and installed two gold FLS in the mid/neck, eventually replaced the TBX with Rothstein RG500D mid shape control, & wired the middle tone pot as a master tone for all pups. The silver/gold/gold FLS specs out same as CS54 pups but with out the noise. Sounds like a traditional strat but the RG500D can cut or peak mids. So it can get various range of pups like Tex specials to CS69's and more. With the tremsetter dialed in correctly it pretty much stays in tune regardless of how much you use whammy. This Strat can pretty much do everything except hard core metal.

That is not to say the TBX control in inferior. (At least not after you do the Blue Guitar mod.) I had the TBX installed in both sets of pickups and it just didn't seem to work very well. So, I didn't use it that much. Then I ran across Steve Ahola's Blue Guitar site and found the following info regarding the TBX. This explains why the 82k resistor on the TBX was designed for the active pickups and electronics like on the Clapton mid boost, etc.

http://www.blueguitar.org/new/schem/_gtr/tbx_poop.txt

Once you change the 82k series resistor to a 220k resistor and wire it series parallel per the following instructions, your TBX will work and sound correct with the passive FLS pups. The cost is less than $1.00 at Radio Shack and 15 minutes of your time. It's really a "no-brainer".

http://www.blueguitar.org/new/schem/_gt ... etails.pdf

Keep in mind TBX is Fender's acronym for Treble Bass eXpander. What it is designed to do is pull the mids while leaving the treble and bass frequencies intact. The effect is much like the premium button on your stereo. Once you do the mod you can imitate the CS69 and other mid scooped type pick ups.

However, I liked having the option of mids peeked with the RG500D. Andy Rothsein's site is here and explains his mid shape control.

Best $30 I've ever spent on a guitar mod.

Here's my Ultra with my Deluxe. The ultra has a neck date of '89 so I think its one of the first batches without the pearly guard... I love this guitar to bits :D

I was a Les Paul player for years..I would never even consider playing a Strat ....Then i was at dales music complaing how i could never reach Trowers tone with my SG ..I know this is a big Duh.. Why i expected to get Trowers tone with an SG i will never know..It was 1989 and i had been playing guitar for about 4 or 5 years..A salesman there handed me a Strat Ultra...I played it and loved it's tone but still wouldn't buy a Strat as rockers didn't play Strats..I would scoff at those old timer single coil guitars as not having enough balls. But i always remembered that Ultra..
Fast forward ten years later it is now the 90's now i'm in my early to mid 30's..Although i was still playing hard rock and metal my taste had started to change...Then i started listening to the Blues and my SG's and Les Pauls wouldn't give me that tone...
I walked into a guitar shop called Gravity Strings one day...Thinking a PRS would give me that tone because Carlos Santanna played a PRS...Next to a used PRS was a 1989 Strat Ultra just like the one i played and remembered from 10 years back..
I own that guitar now..Along with 3 other Strats ..But that Ultra is still a go to guitar....I love the ultra and is one of the sweetest playing guitars out there..Just recently i built a guitar that has beaten its tone and does play as sweet but even with that said the ultra is still much more versatile..The Ultra can do things that no other guitar i have ever owned or played can do..

2 people posted ads on my local Craigslist for Strat pluses yesterday. Wish I had some extra cash.
One was a 93 I think cherry red strat for 800 which sounded pretty good. I think it already sold.

The other is a 93 with a natural ash finish that the guy is asking $1200 for. I know the naturals a little more rare, but sounds too much to me. And I don't really like the light naturals like that.

Yeah, I'd agree that $1200 is bit much right now. Unless that thing is 99% mint and comes w/ HSC. I'd still try to talk them down assuming you had the cash to spare.

To add to Invader's statement regarding things only his Plus Ultra can do, I feel the same way about my '96 DSP. It's definitely my go to guitar. There was a reason Fender named them the "Strat Plus" series. These are Strats and then some. As for prices, I rarely see any of these less than $800 these days. Prices are sure to increase as players discover the Pluses. I suppose that's good if you own it but not so if you want it. However, they are worth it.

I gotta say, I was never big on ultras with pearly guards. I'd always just swap them with normal 3-plys. they just seem cheap to me (no offence intended to all you pearloid fans)

The standard guard (if it wasn't pearloid) was an aged cream colour, which I've always liked. I think it tones in well with the sunburst. Pearloid seems a little busy when combined with the flame maple. I wonder if anyone's added a flame maple laminate pickguard, Russian Strat-style?

I agree. I can't think of any color/fret board combo where I felt pearloid was really appropriate. I like the gold/brass on white combo. I'd love to find an '88 or 89 strat plus w/ RW and swap white PG for gold or brushed brass. If I had the money for a custom Fender, I'd essentially get a Strat Ultra w/ an ebony fret board.

I pick this up today, it's a 1991

Traded a 2000 American Standard for it. It has some chips in the paint, but all in all it's in good shape.

Here's my favorite Strat Ultra, in the rare Fire Storm finish:

ImageThis guitar was made in 1990, according to the serial number. Blue neck, Gold middle, and red 'dually' neck pickups. Sorry about the pics; my flash isn't working correctly.
