Hey Guys,

I was photographing my guitars the other day and I came across something that I never seen before with the Strat Plus/Ultra (potentially all starts in the 90's too). It is that the body routing seems to be more rounded on todays models vs the older Strat Plus. I thought I was going bonkers so I checked the Ultra too and compared it to my 2006 Am.Deluxe and it has different radius on the edge dimensions of the Plus/Ultra. Are my eyes playing tricks on me??  Take a look on the upper horn and compare the two pictures- to me the edges on the Deluxe seem more rounded than the Plus:

No, you're not going crazy. It seems like the American Standards went to that slightly flatter body contour during 1987 - the very earliest ones seem to have something close to the so-called "Fullerton Contours", those deeper contours that the Reissues from CBS/Fullerton era and early Corona era have, but by the middle of the year the American Standards had made that change (and even the Reissues weren't as deeply contoured as they were in Fullerton and for the first 1 1/2 years in Corona). This probably happened right before the first Strat Plus models were shipped, and that flatter contour will be found on all American Standards, Strat Plus, Strat Plus Deluxe, Strat Ultra, Lone Star, Roadhouse, and Big Apple models.

I remember the more rounded contours being a feature touted on the American Series models when they came out in mid-2000, but I'm not remembering if the first American Deluxe models (1998-2003) had the rounded contours or the flatter contours.

Very interesting. (BTW i posted this right while John C was posting his post. So I did not see his post will after I posted. All very posty!) The American Standards and the Strat Plus series has what I call the Corona Curves cut bodies. Back in the Fullerton era they were more rounded like your newer Strat. Makes one wonder if these newer Strats are going back to the Fullerton style bevels?? Below is what I posted on this thread: http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=98105

Ok here are some picts that show the difference between the Fullerton bodies (top, in Fiesta Red) used on the 86-mid 87 American Standard Strats and a hand full of the very first Strat Plus guitars:

Image
Image

First note the butt end of the body. The Fiesta Red 87 Plus is the Fullerton bevel. The 87 Surf Green is the newer Corona bevels (or what I call Corona Curves, love how that sounds!). Note the Fullerton body (Fiesta Red) has a much thicker cut on the arm bevel. Also the Corona cut between the arm bevel and the tummy bevel is thicker and flat on top (top 3 picts). The tummy cut on the Corona (Surf Green) tapers down to a thinner edge while the Fullerton cut is rounder and fatter.

Same with the belly cut on the neck side of the guitars. The Corona cut is thinner in the middle of the body and again flatter up to the neck-side strap button. In my opinion, the Fullerton bevels are nicer and more sexy (if i can say that). Also all the Fullerton bodies have the early wood-screw type bridge post. It has a more rounded head with a straight edge screw driver slot. This screws directly into the wood. All the first American Standards made in 1986 and up to mid 1987 used these. All the Fullerton Strat Plus' used them and a few of the 87 Corona Plus' did as well. They were later replaced buy the method of drilling a bigger hole and then pressing in a brass ferrule in, which a flat topped bridge post was threaded into. See Below:

Speaking of Strat Plus guitars. I went crazy and bought a whole collection from a collector in Las Vegas. Most are 87-89 guitars, except a few older Jeff Beck and a 7-Up Green Clapton (all 90s) guitars and two newer Plus'. My favorites are the Fiesta Red, Dusty Rose and Razz Berry!

Hi!! I'm Juan Carlos Medina. I'm from Posadas, Misiones, Argentina.
I recently bought a 1993 american strat plus deluxe, S/N: N377370.
This one (sorry for the bad quality cellphone photos...):

Image
Image
Image

It came with:
-Maple fretboard
-3 x Silver Fender Lace Sensor
-Fender Wilkinson nut
-Fender-Schaller keys
-Tone (for neck p.u.) and TBX (for mid and bridge p.u.s)
-American standard tremolo with screw-tipe tremolo arm
-White pearloid pickguard and back plate
-Hipshot tremsetter
-Micro-tilt ajdustment sistem
-Black body

The thing is...I have a couple of doubts :/
It's a very old guitar, with so many miles and stages;
-no case,
-a lock (the low E string) was changed,
-the tremsetter was broken (now I fixed it, there's no problem ;) ),
-the neck p.u. had so low gain (I've replaced this one for a blue one, wich I bought in '97, '97 or so...),
-the TBX is broken,
-the back plate screws aren't originals (I've no problem with those, I'll keep this guitar as the nº1 fora loooong time :D ),
-the colour doesn't match with the serial number,
-no certified documentation or any papers, all Ia have is the instructions of tha lace sensor.

So, is it a real strat plus deluxe? is it a factory's frankye? is it just a strat plus with some additions? is it a fake( please PEEEASE say it's not!!! :/ )?

If U have some data or factory documentation about this guitar, or somthing, please, let me know. Everything about it I'll help a lot.
Thanks a lot and best regards!!!!

Hello Juan Carlos and welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on purchasing a Great Strat

Your guitar looks authentic at first glance...Pick Guard (back & front) looks authentic...what I can see of the neck looks right...if the body has a bathtub rout that would be correct for the time period.

there wouldn't be a Certificate of Authenticity because they weren't Custom Shop made...not getting a hard case is normal...

As you've demonstrated..parts do get replaced for functionality :)

Basically it sounds like a good well used guitar...

You can send your Serial Number and a polite request to: consumerrelations@fender.com

They don't need all the info you sent us...and may find complete specs for your guitar

If you like check out the Am Std and Plus Manual & The addendum

Best of Luck

Yo bro! Nicely done!! Enjoyed your analysis of what I referred to as vintage vs moderns contours. I noticed that right off with our Claptons. Those guitars are ostensibly supposed to be'57's with updated electronics. They hardly have the soft contours, arm relief and deep offset waist cut of that year. My Gilmour is a far closer match. Now I'm going to have to look more closely at the Torino Red '87, and my 60th Anniversary '54. More later.
