FMIC's version of having leftovers for dinner, again, and again, and again. The relic finishes they're doing these days, revealing the remnants of a sunburst under the top color heigh back to the early days of custom colors when Fender would just grab an existing sunburst finish body and overspray the Duco paint. Suffice it to say, they give us reason to be P.O.'d at them for some of the corners they've cut, and continue to do so.

You have some interesting things going on with the finish there! But if that is a 1991 it is most likely Frost Red #77. Looks like the body might have been CAR at one time before that. It was not unusual for Fender to refinish bodies that had a less then perfect on the first finish (or 2nd or 3rd or 4th or 5th!) I am sure you realize that the pots are not original? They actually look like Fender Japan Pots from the late 1980s right down to the green cap they often used. You are right, poor soldering!

if this is a player, I would leave it as is. The color is cool other than the ding  . There was times Fender painted over less than perfect Ash laminated bodied (designed for their DX line of Plus guitars) due to the grain not meeting specs. That happened. If you are going to refin, have a pro do it.

Thanks for the info Xhefri, you are very much the man in the know where these guitars are concerned, love your site.
Frost red you say? Interesting, seems to be a fairly rare colour as far as I can tell, but looks a little lighter than mine which is why I though CAR, I'll take some proper pics and post them up later.
BTW there are many more dings than the one in the pic, although thats the worst one, I am reluctant to strip it down though, may have to think about it for a little while longer 8)

With the interest in 'relic' and 'over-finishes', I'd keep it for posterity.

The reason I mentioned it is most likely Frost red is due to the way the finish is on the guitar. One can tell a lot when a finish is broke open, such as in your picture. CAR has a silver base coat as you see deeper down under coats of your guitar with the darker red with silver underneath. Then on top of that is a light redish silverish coat with a light red coat which would make it a brighter candy red = Frost Red. Thanks for the comments about my site. Take care!

Heres a full shot of my guitar, a fairly good representation of the colour, quite a deep metallic red which is why I thought CAR.

Again, thanks for all the info :D

Ya sometimes it is hard. CAR and Frost red are so close, just Frosty is lighter and brighter. Nice looking reliced Plus!

This guitar has been modified with a push-push button. Not sure if it's a mid boost bypass switch or a 7-way pickup selector to add neck & bridge pickups in positions 4 and 5.

Its actually a cutoff button, in my infinite wisdom as a youngster, I had it installed due to seeing Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead had one in his Tele, I was heavily into them at the time :/

Is that the TelePlus you're referring to? It had a stock mini-toggle switch coil splitting the bridge's Red Dually and increasing the number of pickup combinations. I wasn't aware that Greenwood modded the circuit further.

I was wondering the same thing. I looked back a few posts to the other pictures of this guitar, wondering what that mini-switch did. In tracing the wires it looked like a kill switch. But thinking the mini-switch on a Tele-plus was a kill switch? It really is a three way that selects the bridge red lace dually this way - rear pickup, both together in series, front pickup. Did Greenwood change that somehow to be a kill switch?

One thing I did notice about this Strat Plus, was the bridge saddles. They look like straight on mount instead of the offset mount, so the saddles screws are bent to compensate for the problem. The saddles on a plus have the threaded holes for the screws off to one side and not in the middle of the saddle. The picture was pretty fuzzy when I zoom in so I am not 100% sure.

I could be wrong and it was a long time ago that I did this but I was sure at the time he had a kill switch after seeing him play Paranoid Android.
Im not entirely sure the bridge saddles are original, Ive only ever see plus' with brushed steel finish on the saddles, mine are chrome.

I've never seen bridge saddles set up like that.

It would seem my Plus Deluxe had a bit of history before I purchased it back in '95.
I'll spend some money putting it right in the near future, even though I barely use it anymore since I found myself playing bass in a Floyd tribute. Not exactly sure how that happened!
