And to add to this....I have a mid 80s MIJ 62 reissue body. Now the previous owner has it drilled for a 2 post modern bridge and I am considering going back to a vintage. I will need to pound some dowels in and do not wish to do an entire refin since most of it will be covered by the bridge. But I will need some paint and can not figure out what it is. It seems Fender like in the days of using automotive dupont lacquer call various shades of blue "green" and I seem to have to figure out which shade or it cost me at least 16 dollars plus shipping per mistake. Now look at this body and tell me if you would know what to order...

So it that surf green, sea foam green or daphne blue? Or something else?

Greens are hard enough with a good picture. That pict is pretty hard to make out the color so can you take a few in good, preferably natural, lighting and post them. Maybe make a new thread so we do not hijack the Plus Ultra thread! Or email them to me at xhefri@gmail.com

Hi there, new user to the forum. I recently acquired refinished (with gold car paint i believe) Strat plus for €300. It had emg's installed by the previous owner, had it original (purple) paint crudely removed with a belt sander leaving some strange contouring on the body.

I really loved the way the neck played though, so im currently getting vintage 54 pu's installed and thinking of going for a coral blue re finish. I really love the look of 60s strats and have been thinking of changing the tuners and bridge to match this style too... I currently gig a 57 style custom shop strat and love its tone but find the v neck and smaller frets limiting for playability.

Is this a crazy way of thinking or does it make sense considering i could come out with a perfecting gigging guitar (hopefully) for less than €500. Or should i embrace its strat plus-ness and leave it as is?

Would love to hear any advice or options, particularly on the idea of changing the hardware....

Thanks in advance...

C

IMHO....the Neck is Everything...buy a body, new or used...

...that suits you and the build strategy and build up from there.

Sell all the bits of the old guitar you don't need.

That's what I did with this Candy Apple Red Strat Plus w/ Ultra Pick Guard:

Welcome to the Forum! Nice looking guitar as is! Anyhow I can understand you doing mods since the guitar has been refinished. BUT don't do all this to this guitar. It is like trying to have a sex change operation! Making a Strat Plus in a 1950's Strat is crazy! :? I have seen people go to the 6 hole bridge from the 2 post bridge and it is a cobble job. Enjoy this guitar as it is. Change the color if need be, but retain all the feature that make this guitar a great playing guitar—the roller nut, locking tuners, and the 2 point bridge. Buy a mexican 50s reissue and love it for what it is. But to make all these changes in this guitar is ruining a guitar that was designed to be what it is. Anyhow that is my 2 cents!

Really appreciate the feedback,

Think i'll leave the nut, tuners and bridge based on this advice and simply go with the pickup change (Can't warm to the emgs that are there, so compressed) and maybe a repaint. Love some of the guitars on this thread, that candy apple looks stunning. Might try something similar. Was thinking of a daphne or sonic blue, but maybe this wouldn't work with a more modern style like this.

Xhefri I agree, it looks cool as it is...

...best bits are the Neck...(LSR Nut, Tuners)...and that Bridge, yup...

...but a body that's been repainted and badly contoured with a belt sander...

...only the OP can say if it's comfortable enough to keep, maybe keep sanding till he likes it. :D

A very good used Strat Plus body stripped costs maybe $250...less than a refinish?

In time spent quite a bit, maybe...

...colmrogan many other more and less expensive good Fender bodies use the 2 point bridge.

It's up to you to keep us informed and include pictures, the more the better.

Good Luck,

- Dan

I didn't refinish that Candy Apple Red body, just cleaned and buffed...

...I did totally refinish this Hwy One, very well played in, Nitro body...

...my "Glossy Relic" build:

C'mon Xhefri, I know you're working on a build, spill the beans!

Holy crap that hway one looks amazing... been reading up on the advantages of the tuners/nut etc since you guys wrote back, i guess the guitar has a lot going for it. wish it had the original lace sensors in it when i got it, they seem to have more responsiveness in them than the emgs that are there at the minute. Maybe the gold colour is ok, but i've been hankering over a sonic blue style look. Maybe best save that for a heavy relic 60s custom shop style thing though.

If you don't mind my asking, how did you achieve that looks with the highway 1???

Thanks for the kind words colmrogan.

I studied 100's of photos of vintage and custom relic instruments, got a feel for what I liked.

The body was player relic-ed when I bought it. Being Nitro, there was no tough Urethane finish to get through. I sanded and scraped until it looked right to me.

The finish is "rattle can" gloss urethane, lot's of thin coats. The neck needed sanding and refinishing too, but that's a story for another time.

Now I'm working on a Hot Rod Brownie, featuring a 12 y/o Clapton neck with a new Vintage Hot Rod 50's body, a Nitro 2TSB.

These are the parts you can see:

Anybody have any recommendations for a colour for this refinish i'll be getting done? I know its a silly questions but just wondering what colour would best complement the brushed tuners and the rosewood neck, in your opinion of course!

Col Mrogan,

Now thats a killer little rig you have there. In regards to changing the tuners and bridge to match, entirely up to you. Its never going to look 60s with that nut on it, so if you're looking to go the whole hog you'd need to get a new neck, and that would defeat the purpose of it being a "strat plus". But still do what you wanna do with it, good price that you picked it up for.

That rig though... class 5 marshall? Great wah and is that a klon clone in there? or an actual klon? Do you gig with that rig? just mic it through a pa, or bigger amp for when you're out of the house?

SORRY TO GO OFF TOPIC :)

Hi man, I've actually updated the board quite a bit since then, have a pedal projects Klone now that was an Irish Jimmy Behan Klone in that shot, with the same panasonic film caps as the orig, have been tricking around with an ehx freeze for some songs too. Settled on a vintage Mercedes cream to go on the strat, will post pics when finished, will be interesting to see how it pans out. Thanks for all the input, here's the board as is now! That CAE wah is a really useful tool actually.

Hey guys, first post here. Ive owned a '91 Plus Deluxe for around 20 years now, absolutely love it and it will stay with me till I die more than likely!
It has acquired a few battle wounds to the paintwork over the years and I am considering stripping down the beautiful CAR finish as its just going to get worse as time goes by. How easy would this be to strip down? Or should I leave it to a pro?
As I understand it, it has an Ash veneer right? Why would they put a solid colour over a veneer?? In any case it would be a waste to have that veneer hidden so Im going to go for a semi translucent type finish.
One or two other issues as well, Ive only opened it up recently and discovered some horrible soldering and lack of TBX so intend to replace it with nice 7 way TBX kit off fleabay.

Heres one of the battle scars:

And heres the mess inside...makes me sad :/

Cheers

You have some interesting things going on with the finish there! But if that is a 1991 it is most likely Frost Red #77. Looks like the body might have been CAR at one time before that. It was not unusual for Fender to refinish bodies that had a less then perfect on the first finish (or 2nd or 3rd or 4th or 5th!) I am sure you realize that the pots are not original? They actually look like Fender Japan Pots from the late 1980s right down to the green cap they often used. You are right, poor soldering!

if this is a player, I would leave it as is. The color is cool other than the ding  . There was times Fender painted over less than perfect Ash laminated bodied (designed for their DX line of Plus guitars) due to the grain not meeting specs. That happened. If you are going to refin, have a pro do it.
