Aha well, I guess its supply and demand numbers wise, when I was looking on flea bay recently I noticed quite a few in the states would show up and there a bit cheaper than here in the UK.

If your buying id recommend getting one, if your selling id recommend keeping it 8)

Did they indicate what color it is? I am pretty sure this is Lipstick Red. I just picked up a nice Bahama Green and a Torino Red a few weeks ago. When the weather gets better so I can take nice pictures, I will post them.

I've created separate threads for the Tele Plus and 22-fret bass guitars made between 1989 and 1994.

I still have one Tele Plus (Version I) tucked away but can't post it because it is the "forbidden" color for this Forum...... I really like both Version I & II. One day I might add a page to my website. Just a pain to do...

Two finishes are "forbidden", firestorm and icestorm.

Hopefully the troll who jeopardized the forum with those infamous "storm" finishes is definitely banned!

Hi folks, the seller described it as candy apple red but I didn't really believe that. He used it as his go to studio recording guitar for 10 years. I bought it, as my fave is my 1987 standard and these arn't a million miles away build wise. Id handled one previously.
Its well used with a ding or two but is sweet and im glad I have it.
Like Impulse 7 said thru a pedal (into my homebuilt 5E3 deluxe) it is good. :)

Id bid on a couple before snagging this on fleabay. Serial no is N5.....
The tremsetter is sat in the case and the pivot is the loosest of any strat ive had in my hand I assume due to the low friction LSR nut?
I took a pic outside to show the colour but I think its similar to the indoor shot.

I looked on your site Xhefri which is a wonderful info resource. Shall we call it lipstick red then?

Cheers...... Al

I would call it that...but the sure test is to look under the pickguard. Lipstick Red is created by using a base coat that is white (often Arctic White or Vintage White) followed by transparent color coats of red, followed by clear coats. The end result is a deep, bright red. But a peek in the neck socket or under the hood will tell the story as the buffers at Fender often buff through the clear and red coats revealing the white along the edges of the swimming pool route. And in the neck socket, Fender uses a router device to clean out the extra paint buildup that could prevent the neck from fitting. This too will reveal if there is both red and white layers in the paint. The other indicator that your guitar is Lipstick red is the year. I have only seen Torino Red from 87-89. But Lipstick I have seen and owned all the way up to 1994.

As mentioned, a color very close to this is called Torino Red. It is a solid color with a clear coat. So while it is a bright red, it tends to be a little darker and does not have that depth to it as seen in the Lipstick Red. Reds are very hard to capture with a camera. And greens are even harder. I just shot a bunch of picts of my Bahama Green and they all look like Taos Turquoise! See my Torino Red 89 Plus below.

Hey Xhefri, do you think Fender ever used metallic undercoats for Candy Apple Red?

I seem to remember that my late '93 Strat Plus had Silver showing under the red in the Pickup rout. I'm just too lazy to dig it out and take a screwdriver to it.

Unless there's a challenge flag!

Regardless, here are the Fender Color Chart Codes for ya Al 87:

http://www.fender.com/support/color-chart/

There are a bunch of Red colors that look very similar on my computer screen.

For sure! I explain a lot about the Candy colors on my website here: http://xhefriguitars.com/page2.html#C13 and scroll down to the section entitled: Candy color complications. Lots of interesting info there based on the technical side of the finish work.

Fender used both silver and gold base coats for Candy Apple Red and Midnight Wine. In either case it was a very fine metallic base coat. A silver base coat was used exclusively on Midnight Blue, Electric Blue, and for those Clapton lovers, Candy Apple Green (aka 7-Up Green, which was NOT used on a Strat Plus.)

One thing a person needs to be careful about is trying to identify an older Strat's color by using Fender's newest color charts. I do not know how many times I have seen someone who has a color like Caribbean Mist on a 1993 Strat Plus and then refer to the Fender charts and think that it must be Teal Green Metallic. So many of the colors Fender used in 87 through the 90s are not used now. Like some people think a Electric Blue Strat plus must be Mystic Blue. Or one of the most common mistakes is having a 1990's Vintage White Plus and think it is Olympic White! I think you get the picture! :-)
