Looking for some help/opinions here folks. For Xhefri or anyone who cares to comment. We know that it is widely believed that the American Standard Stratocaster and the Strat Plus were released some time in 1987. I have seen several E0 serial numbers on american standards with neck and body dates from March of that year.. However we seldom see serial numbers lower than E4 on the strat plus and seldom see any neck or body dates earlier than the last quarter of that year. My questions are these? What time of the year do we think the strat plus was released in '87? MY opinion is it was a few to 6 months later than the american standard. Also what is the lowest serial number ( and I know this isn't a direction correlation to date)that anyone has seen on a strat plus. Happy to hear your responses.

Wish there was a rock solid answer for this question, but even after talking with the guys at Fender it was pointed out to me that before the more common advent of computers, Fender's record keeping as not so great. I think around 1992-3 they started keeping computer records. Then one person who has been there told me back in 85-88 there was a lot of things that just happened and sometimes the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing, so some things that went out the door were not even listed that way in a brochure.

Anyhow saying this I know the American Standards started in late 1986 or very early 1987. The Plus guitars were slated for sale in March but due to part delays they came out a bit later. The oldest I have owned was Nov 87. One guy emailed me and he had one that had a pencil date of late June 87 on the butt-end of neck of his Strat Plus. That is the earliest I have seen. And all of these had E4 serial numbers.

Strange things went on there at Fender! Like after the Plus was out for a while, they started using E8, E9 and even N0 serial numbers and the full Wilkinson nut on the 88-90 Plus'. BUT when the Strat Plus DX came out in mid-summer of 1989 they had a split Wilkinson nut and E4 serial numbers, and some with the Sperzel Locking tuners, while the Standard Plus had Schaller. Ummmmm.

Thanks for chiming in Xhefri! Anyone else thoughts?? I recently picked up a plus with an E41 serial number with a pencil date of October '87, its due to me later this week. I will post some photos when I get it that's the earliest serial I have come across on a Plus. Thanks again Xhefri...

E0?

Ya I wondered the same but figured he meant E4 since that was the context. Good to have that clarified. One thing I have seen on a couple 87 Plus was the older style trem posts had rounded heads and they screwed right into the wood, just like the early American Standard Strats.

Something I've been pondering.

Are the latest Stratocaster Deluxe Plus considered to be a latest version of the Strat Plus?

Or is it a marketing hype- considering how popular this 90's model has become.. Was it time for fender to ride that bandwagon?

Is it time to adopt this model in the Plus family?

I'm on the fence about it. :?

I'm sure you understand that Fender, as the owner of the name, has the right to do anything it wishes with it. Automobiles have been re-incarnated numerous times in like fashion. I suppose the most recent example of such is the new Ford Mustang in it's 50th Anniversary rendition. It will certainly be a no-brainer to differentiate between vintage and contemporary on the basis of dates. There's enough distance between the two models to do so and a significant difference in their design specifications, each being a pioneer in its own right. In addition, consistency in referring to the 'newbie' as a Stratocaster Deluxe Plus, as opposed to a Strat Plus, may also help the cause.

Doc brings out a good point. When I saw the new DX Plus released at NAMM I just shook my head because this was not a reissue by any means of a DX Plus. I felt the same way with the making of the newer Chevy Impalla! They are far cry from the original! But now the new Mustangs ans Cameros are a bit different. The looked like the old, they were still muscle cars, but had modern hi tech improvements. The new DX Plus is just a "car" with a few hi tech additions, but no LSR roller nuts like the other DX Plus Strats, no Lace Sensors that were iconic for a Plus - the guitar should have been called something else! And now doing searches on the web or even eBay will be cluttered even more with these wannabe Plus' just like the newer Strat Plus Top guitars have already done! :?

The company will be obliged to move forward, keeping pace with technology and looking for ways to attract the 'tekkies' who are embracing the new gear and new interfaces. For us 'old guys', a Strat Plus will always signify a seminal series of guitars. The new Stratocaster Deluxe Plus may, in it's own right, become the same, looking back 20 years from 2034. Perhaps we shall all be fortunate enough to be doing so.

To me, it just means we're not going to see any type of re-issue of the Strat Plus line.

So now I'm hoping Fender will do a re-issue of the International Series line.

Quite possibly so. When you look at the modern player Telecaster Plus, that looks & sounds nothing like the original series. In my opinion, it pretty much ruined the chance for any re-issue and to me, it was a guitar that is from a marketing perspective trying to cash in on the name.

So it makes me wonder if the custom shop will ever reissue the plus/ultra line in at least another 10-20 years time.. Or will there ever be a line that will remake the plus as an AVRI.

I just wish that the business relationship between fender and lace lasted. I feel that if it did then the plus line would have still been made at least for a few more years. Vintage Noiseless, SCN and N3 pickups to me don't give the laces a good run for the money- not to say they arent good pickups though.. S1 switches claimed to deliver humbucker tones when they didn't and the colour arrangements since have turned bland from the bright and colourful colours of the nineties

My opinions of course.

Blertle.....just connect one on one with Xhefri. He's your Santa. The Custom Shop won't be able to touch him in terms of your interests either now, or twenty years hence.
