MR NH, doing great. Thanks for asking! Ya I hear you! Even though all these Plus' should have the exact same neck profile, some of the 87-88 seem a tad slimmer. Even the 1991 Ultra I just picked up feels like it has more taper toward the headstock. I have a number 87-88s tucked away. Better investment than the stock market these days!

Bear in mind that necks are hand finished. There's going to be some slight variability from operator to operator. Maybe more so back then, in the new start up period, and with older technology.

So true ZZ. That is what I contribute all the variation seen on the necks of these guitars the first few years they were made. Seems like after 1993 they were a lot more consistent. Here's a picture of the 1991 Ultra that I recently picked up. The neck date stamp indicates it's early 91. This guitar was bought in 1991 and rarely played. The gal that owned it decided she was not a Fender person as she liked playing her Ibanez guitars. So she basically she put this guitar away in it's case in the closet. I just got it in about three or four weeks ago. A very nice sample of an early Ultra. Note the weird cross grain on the top, located on the upper face of the guitar. You have your vertical grain and then a few stripes of horizontal grain. There is some on the back side as well. Never saw that before on a flame top guitar.

Taos Turquoise was an "unauthorized" colour for the Clapton model and only a very few were made. I saw a photo from a Taos Turquoise EC Strat which belonged to Eric himself a couple of years ago.

Very nice Strat there nh_strat!! Nice find :D

Love that colour. Just wondering though- this guitar should not have a string tree.. Was this added afterwards?

Do you find the guitars with the locking tuners to be a tad headstock heavy compared to the vintage style?

Good eyes there Bertles. Too bad that on a nice Strat like this someone added that. The guitar looks nearly mint. Mr NH, is this an 88?

On the Taos...;No string tree should have been there, but the buyer clearly stated it was added after and I have no reason to doubt it. Xhefri, I have a Fiesta Red E44 87-88 and this Taos Turquoise also E44 87-88 that are my investment guitars and will only be played at home. My live plus is an absolutely les paulish in weight 89 Midnight Blue with a rosewood board which weighs in around 8.5-9.0 pounds. ( At least) Its a beauty also, and in mint condition, but being the gigging guitar its going to take some bumps. According to Xhefri the midnight blue will chip easily and my case already put one in. I'll let that one take the lumps.
Here is the midnight blue one..

Hey Mr NH, Midnight blue @ 9 lbs? WOW! I have found in some instances that Fender places a solid color over a heavy piece of Ash. Perhaps it was a chunk of wood that would not look good with a clear finish. Could be that's what you have or it could be just a butt cut of alder. That can be some heavy wood too. Have had a couple Strat Plus' That were almost as heavy as a Les Paul. Midnight blue is a really sweet color in direct sunlight. And sometimes the clear coat's yellow and it causes the guitar to take on a little bit of a purple hue. Nice guitar!

Right new readings then;

1989 Plus Deluxe
Blue - Bridge = 9.29k TBX tone on 5
Blue - Bridge = 10.32k TBX tone on 10

Silver - Middle = 6.48k TBX tone on 5
Silver - Middle = 6.96k TBX tone on 10

Silver - Neck = 6.91k (don't now why it changed!)

1991 Plus Deluxe
Red - Bridge = 11.99k TBX tone on 5
Red - Bridge = 13.87k TBX tone on 10

Silver - Middle = 6.35k TBX tone on 5
Silver - Middle = 6.84k TBX tone on 5

Blue - Neck = 12.37k

With the TBX tone pots on 0 there was only a 0.01 difference to the 5 setting on both guitars and pickups.

Here is the measures that confirms my observations (on my 89' Strat Plus with Lace Sensor Hot Gold with Hot Bridge) I told Xhefri once by email.

I am sure that the TBX (from 5 to 10) not only cut the bass (it cuts them very few btw) but still increases (or let get through more) the high mediums and the general output. Almost as if it were a no load tone.

I posted this guitar last November (2012). I just got it out and played it for about an hour. What a nice guitar! :D I was trying to decide if I should sell it, and a determining factor for that was whether or not I really like the color. After getting it out again looking it over, playing it, I enjoyed it so much I decided I probably won't sell it. This is a late 1993 Ice Blue Strat Plus with a once piece Maple neck[/b]. It not only plays nice, but I have concluded that it has a great look. For some reason I was thinking I did not care for this color, but on a second take, well.... I really like it. kind of like a light Lake Placid Blue or an off Caribbean Mist. What are your thought about this color?? :?: :?: :?:

So I stumbled across this thread through google and joined the fender community just to show off my baby. Can I just say it's awesome to see 71 pages of Plus love! Anyway, I only have one electric guitar and it's the only one I need. This guitar is the end all be all for me, my one item in a fire. My first electric guitar. She's named Juliet and she's a 1987-88 Lake Placid Blue E4 serial number. I know I might catch grief for having the seymour duncan's in, but not to worry, I still have the Laces and have been recently contemplated throwing them back in. Either way she plays and sounds like a stream that runs through heart of guitar heaven.

Hey PicknGrin86, welcome to the Forum! Nice guitar. I love Lake Placid Blue. Did you happen to see the Ice Blue posted right above your post? Kind of a light LPB. Good you kept the original pickups. If you ever did consider selling this down the road the value will be better if you can put it back to stock, especially with a 87-91 model as those are becoming more collectible.

From that post about the Corona Factory visit, leads me now to think about the 'how many pieces' blanks these paint finished guitar bodies are cut from.

I have seen 3 piece bodies quite often. On solid colors one can sometimes see the lamination seam where the pieces are glued together. Don't think I have seen more than 3 that I can think of.
