Now there are all kinds of stories about these finishes. One is that a guy worked at Fender for about 1.5 years and he was the only one there who knew how to do these finishes. He quit so they stopped....so the legend goes. Mike Edridge at Fender, at one time, stated Fender could still do these finishes but would charge a whopping amount of money to do so.

Who is this Mike Eldridge you speak of?

Mike Eldridge is/was Fender Custom Shop Mgr

Xhefri: I think you might want to fix that typo on you're site - it's Mike Eldred, not Eldridge. I don't know if this is your "friend" popping up in a different guise or if this was a legit question.

Thanks John. Ya "typo" is my middle name. With my real job I have a copy editor and am glad I do. There are so many typos on my website that I even put this disclaimer on the home page: "This sight is under continuing construction!!! Hey, Don't critisize my missplellings!!!" LOL   And your right, any time a new name shows up with only 1 or 2 posts, it is usually my buddy.

I'm betting on the former.

Uhhh...is it Mike Eldridge, or not? Seems to be, or are there two guys? :?

BTW, I took a look at the links, good stories all (feat. Mike Eldridge/Eldred), but especially the one from TDPRI, where swleamon won a Guitar Center contest for a Fender Custom Shop Telecaster and took his son out to CA to spec it out, that's a special story. Wish I could see the pics but ya need an icloud ID. Thanks for that, Dan.

The Custom Shop 35th Anniversary model is the only Strat Plus to sport the Elite circuit; it's regarded as the precursor to the Strat Ultra.

Some erroneously describe the 2-way toggle as a pickup selector enabling more tonal options, which is not true.

That toggle switch turns off the Elite preamp.

Hey Mr Blertles, I looked at these online and there are some real beauties out there. What I don't get it the top on this one. It is like two sections of curly maple sandwiched on a piece of alder? What is up with the piece of wood down the middle like that? Other 35th-ers I looked at on line had match-book tops. This is odd. They are asking right at $2000 for it. Ummm...I think I will save what little money I have! But thanks for sharing that. I never knew about these till now and as Chromeface pointed out, these might be some precursor to the Ultra as they were made in 1990—or they were contemporary to the Ultra....

Well I have my website up and running with new off-line software and just redid the Ultra Page. Still a few glitches that need to be worked out. At least now I can do a serious makeover on some of the pages with bigger pictures and a better write up. Maybe even fix a few typooss.

Just took a peek at your site - LOTS of new Guitar Pics and Info! :D

The Gibsons gave me GAS, as did the Curly Maples (Ultra and Am Dlx) and I want one of those '97 Vintage Red Am Strats w/ the Billy Sullivan Special EMG SA electronics....

AARRGGHH, I want 'em all. :)

The site changes are a real treat, thanks!

Hi there to all

I’ve been an avid Strat Plus Deluxe fan for quite a while now and have spent a bit too much time reading this thread over the past few weeks and even more time on Xhefri’s site over the last few years!

Anyhow after many years spent on motorcycle forums and that pass-time/job now being replaced by an older love of guitars I thought it was about time to join a forum and what better way to start than on a Strat Plus thread!!!

A little bit about me (only a small amount mind!), I’ve been playing for around 18 years and have been in a semi-pro covers band for the last four years (well, as semi pro as you can get living and gigging in Jersey, Channel Islands!) playing Rock/pop through to old school 70s Rock.

Anyhow, down to the important stuff, my number one guitar (along with a 2001 Les Paul Standard) since around 1997 has been a 1989 Strat Plus Deluxe in “Dusty Rose” on Alder (at least I think it is from looking on the net and mainly Xhefri’s awesome site!) It’s got Silver, Silver, Blue Laces and has been well used by me and also the previous owner. I recently re-dressed the frets on it as they were beginning to flatten out quite badly. Incidentally, I’d never redressed frets before on any guitar before tackling my No. 1! Am I brave or what!!! ;) Lol

My No 2 guitar is a recent addition from e-bay of all places (it’s not easy getting second-hand guitars in Jersey). When it came up I was more than excited as I’d been searching for the “right” guitar at the “right” price for around 5 years to partner with my 89. This one is a 1991 Strat Plus Deluxe in natural Ash. It popped up on the Bay at around 11pm on a Thursday night at a Buy it Now price of £675 plus shipping (around USD1,000) which is good as most of them are around the £800 mark in the UK. This progressed to me waking the wife and telling/asking her very excitedly that I wanted the guitar which she agreed to, or at least she seemed to nod. ;) Although she did ask me in the morning whether she had dreamt of us having the chat about a guitar! lol

Back to the point, the advert was really well written and the guitar was obviously owned by a definitive muso who needed the cash for a Plexi and was more into his Teles. Further to more communication with him after purchase he said that it was the best Strat he had ever played which I would say is probably true as it plays almost as well as my No 1. This is a beast of a Strat though, Blue, Silver Red combination and 9lb in weight result in a Dirty as hell guitar. As clean and sparkly sounding as my 89 is this is pure grit, well as far as grit goes with chimey Lace sensors! It had almost all the case candy with it including the original fender strap!

My next port of call when I have the cash is definitely going to be an Ultra if I can find one however I think convincing the wife that I need 10 guitars rather than 9 will probably be more difficult than finding the cash!

I’m actually going to be in Florida for a holiday soon and am looking forward to visiting a Guitar Centre there to check out what they have secondhand.

Cheers all

Sacha

Hello Sacha and welcome to the forum. Nice introductory post and pics.

I thought it over (for about 2 seconds) and the answer is Yes, you need a 10th guitar for the symmetry!

Hey welcome to the Forum Sacha. Thanks for the heads up about my site. Really just a backyard amateur thingy. Anyhow tell me about the Danlectro? Do you like it? I think of those back in the early 70s and we all thought they were kind of junk guitars, but they seem to have made a comeback. I played one unplugged at a music store about a year ago and it played nice and was light weight. What about the sound? An Ultra? Ummm contact me some time!

Well, why not installing an MDX boost circuit on those babies to fatten up things a bit?

DOH!! Just lost my whole post ahhhhhh!

Ok re-write.

Hi Xhefri

Danelectro is well cool, unbelievable value (cost me £180 new), only ever had to flatten a couple of frets due to a small (and I mean small) amount of fret buzz/choking. Also, the selector switch is temperamental and doesn't like being not used.

Can't comment on new Chinese versions as never tried one but the latest Chinese ones are supposed to be almost as good as the Korean ones like mine.

The pickups sound best on the in-series selection and to be fair I don't know of any other guitar that does that sound! The neck pickup sound close to my Les paul when I had a Gibson 490R installed (no kidding) and the bridge is close to my 89 Strat bridge pickup (Blue Lace). the finish is awesome all over and much better than it should be for the price.

In fact it's so good that I'm really GASing for a new 12 string Danelectro which are around £275 new. I'd say try and get a secondhand mint Korean made U2/U3 but if you can't I don't think you would be disappointed with a new Chinese one.

Oh dear, you've now given me an easy avenue for an Ultra....... GAS!!!!

Have you got any coming up next year (wife goes back to work in Jan and my Florida holiday will be paid off, haven't been on holiday for more than a week in 5 years due to mortgage and three kids!). What would a custom built one cost me?

Hi Chrome Face

Yep it's a 00028-EC which I bought with insurane money due to the custom built 000 being broken which is awaiting repair (been broken for around 11 years!). Brightest acoustic I've ever played with a neck that feels like an electric.

Cheers all

Sacha
