I own a Deluxe (3 single coils, ash) and I think the SCN pickups are not so raw sounding. They wouldn"t be Rory Gallagher's or SRV's choice (IMO of course). They're silent, glassy and classy but they're very good for recording.
If you aren't used to handling the single coil hum and you like the single coil tone, buy it. Any other ideas SCN owners?

Ah, you should try an Am Standard- maybe you can see a difference. I've heard people saying that Highway 1s sound a lot like Deluxes (no personal experience though).

Like Mike said, if you like them better, they're better for you.

One thing to look out for whenever you buy anything nice, some people just love to suck the joy out of it for you.

People here will caution you, on stuff like if you are maybe paying too much, or are entering an iffy 2nd hand purchase. But one thing most of us agree on, is that we all have differing preferences, and a person should only cater to their own desires when buying a guitar. Don't get me wrong, we'll yammer on about what we like, but we all know that we're all different.

Also, saying it has a 'rubbery' sound, what does that even mean? Sounds like someone is full of it, and/or trying to force their own preferences on you.

I agree with 12B. A good post. I have a Ash Deluxe and I like my SCN's but I also have other guitars with different voicing pups, So you see , it's what you like best yourself. Good luck!

Oh, Welcome to the forum! :)

Like others have said. Let your ears guide you on with pups sound best.

For me, I couldnt wait to get the "Toneless" out of my Deluxes (I guess Im addicted to the 60 cycle).

In regards to your question the scns have much more
mild sound like they are rounded off (IMO) than say
american standards or tex-mex but they are still useful
what kind of music are you doing and who are you going
to play it with

the reason i say this is because i play in church and i
tend to favor a more raw sound like the tex mex
of course i am playing with a piano an acoustic guitar
a older guy who chicken picks on an es335 so i
don't want that mild sound i need to stand out
but by themselves they can be real smooth

just my opinion

Love scn's. I dont think their at all a rounded, flat or rubbery. I think if anything they are overly trebely. And as 12B says someone always wants to piss on your chips. If you like them and you can work with em, stuff everyone else

I love stuffing!!!

I have yet to hear the SCNs for myself. I am really hoping I won't like them, because then I will be forced to rethink about true single coils. ;)

Both say Fender made in U.S.A., both are quality instruments, and both will retain their value. I hear SCNs sound better on Deluxes.

I will not say anything more, because everyone else has said it.

Why have a preconception as to how you will like them. Companies love that kind of thinking. It means they can just keep rehashing the same old tripe and never move forward. Never put any effort or finance into developing new products. Yet keep charging you more and more for the old rubbish.

Next time i've a strat with regular pickups in i'll put a blind test up. Without seeing you'd never hear the difference enough to say for definate 'thats a scn' or 'thats a kinman' or any other kind of pickup.

I liked the SCN's in my delux so much I put them in My Chinese Squire with a Hot Rail at the bridge. My Tele's Pups were replaced with SCN's too.

I just won some noiseless pups on Ebay, I'm going to install them on a CIJ Lake Placid Blue Rosewood fretboard 62 re issue Strat. The strat is in MINT condition and the noiseless pups should not only look good, but i'm sure they will sound awesome...otherwise fender would not have mass produced them. I will post pics once their in.

ohhh My experience with pups is that every different pup has it's purpose to serve. It's the player that helps the pup find it.

cheers.
