I am just wondering if there is a preference for a best style of string tree to buy? I need two of them.

And if anyone has a preference? Please explain!

Vintage Wing style

Wing style - with spacers

Roller style - modern look

graph tech - graphite

graph tech - tusq

the graph tech will not match but if they are beneficial

What kind of guitar is it for? Are there any string trees there now?

I ask because if you switch types, you could end up with visible leftover holes! Some String trees (like those on the American Standard) actually use two holes (a big one for the screw and a smaller one for a guide pin).

It`s for my strat that has just a single screw wing type.I don`t have staggered tuners and am going to add another so will buy a matched set.

That sounds like a very good plan. It's a vintage look, after all!

Sorry, but Im not sure why you think you need string trees? What is the problem you are trying to solve?

Yep, that's what I was wondering when we saw that headstock on another thread a day or two back.

Is it malfunctioning in some way? If not, I'd leave it as it is. Maybe put a spacer to raise the existing tree a bit, but nothing else.

If Fender didn't put a second tree on that guitar it's because you don't need one. And (regarding the other thread) staggered tuners are nice - but not essential.

Cheers - C

I have a single vintage winged tree on my '66 reissue. First thing I did when I got the guitar home was release the strings from the tree, and I doubt they'll ever be going back under there. I've never seen the point of them, myself. I prefer to leave enough spare string to give the option of winding each string to the bottom or top of the post depending on the desired "break" angle. But that's just me.. :)

I was under the impression that it was supposed to have two to
be "correct".It really has given me no problems tuning or sound wise.
I think I will put a small spacer under the existing tree and be done.

It`s a wonderful thing finding that diamond in the rough!
I have not wanted to play any of my other guitars since I got this one.
The thing just sounds so darn good and gets me playing things I never played before.I even played identical riffs same amp on the other guitar to see if it was the newness factor but it was not.

I was feeling a bit like I got took for a while when I found out the body was Mexi, but then the neck was still very nice vintage US quality or better and the Fralins in the pickguard kinda made up for it.So for a guitar I got about $550 into now to be my number one out of four others is almost comical. There is a reason I kept going back and playing it several times I guess I could not believe it sounded so good.
I was another brand advocate for the last 10 years or so. Although I have always had a Fender in the stable.
Guess, I`m hooked on Fender big time now. Plotting my next strat already:D

I have the graphtech trees and saddles. The bugger stays in tune. Very little issues.

Some have had one, some have had 2. depends on the year. No need to add another unless you have the issues Ceri mentioned. Though I would be inclined top think something else was wrong, like the nut being worn, rather than thinking I needed to add another tree.

Mine came with that same basic wing design. I was thinking about putting some type of tree (newer Fender MIA, Graphtech, roller/barrel, etc) but I just went with the a wing & spacer. It was much cheaper and didn't require extra holes drilled into the headstock.

The only problem with the basic wing is it is too close to the headstock, the break angle of the strings between it and the nut is too great and it may bind up. I found that the spacer helps.

Ok the issue is not whether it "needs" the extra tree to play right or the fact that it has any playing issues. This is a Genuine Fender replacement neck and the kid who owned this guitar really did not know how to set it up, hence my thinking it possibly was supposed to have another tree.It plays fine though so that is not going to happen.Existing tree does however sit flush with the headstock and as pointed out have quite an angle on the strings, more than necessary for sure.I will put a short spacer under existing tree just to get it off the headstock a bit.I have decided to use a string ferule as my spacer. I know tricky!
