I'm gonna have to differ with you on this. They might be able to nail a price based on what a guitar is if it's in their blue-book, or on ebay. But when it comes to a guitar equipped with custom pickups, they have no clue how to identify them. I bought a Squier Affinity with 2- Seymour Duncan Jb Jr.s in it for $50, and a Hamer with 1-SD Duckbucker and 1- DiMarzio HS-3 for $90.

You do the math. The 4-pickups alone were worth more than the 2-guitars combined. They made their money, and I pimped out my gear dirt cheap because they really didn't know what they had.

OK. Let's differ. That's all cheap junk anyway to me. I wouldn't touch it at any price.

I occasionally see a few Strats advertised as American Standards that are really Highway 1s. I'll post a pic of the next one I see.

Here is a website that is selling all kinds of Chinese fake guitars.

Thanks for that link. Guys should study that to see what the Chinese fakes look like.

I started this thread some time ago. The Fender fakes are getting closer and closer to the real thing (especially the headstock decals).

Some of those Gibsons are getting closer too. The obvious fake Les Pauls have 3 screw truss rod covers. But I see they are doing some 2 screws now. But their serial numbers and "Made in USA" stamps on the back of the headstocks is still in a too big font.

Seems to me there's an easy solution: Don't buy guitars on ebay.

If you're buying new, then buy from an authorized dealer of whatever brand you're shopping for.

If you really want a vintage instrument then go through a reputable vintage dealer. There's many around who either have what you want or can find what you're looking for.

I've made less than 10 buys on ebay (of random stuff) over the years and I've gotten burned twice - Once it was a DVD that turned out to be a burned copy of a video that had been digitally dubbed from a VHS. Second was a pair of Tele pickups that were fake. Those are pretty lousy odds and now I just stay away from ebay altogether.

Those are pretty bad odds.

Luckily (?) I've never transacted any business on ebay! Since I never have, and it would be too late to start now (all that newbee stuff), I doubt that I ever will.

I've bought a lot of stuff on ebay. But the most I ever paid for anything was $50.00. I love old records, and paperbacks, but I would never make a major purchase.

The only fakes I know of are the ones not made in the US.

Except fender japan, korea and mexico (remember fender us owes everything about its current production standards to japan). Marshall, Traynor, orange, hiwatt, laney and vox too. Non of them are US made. Whilst Schecter, tom anderson, james tyler and all those other wonderfull fakes have been or are made in the US.

Fakes? They are "homages" ... veritable tributes to the Genius of Leo Fender, George Fullerton, and the others who put French Curves to work.

I think the hardest fakes to spot are the ones that are done at home one at a time...Where they are what i call half truth guitars.. Stuff like a MIM body with a legitimate MIA neck and something like an ultra or deluxe loaded pick guard ..It is really a parts caster but being sold at a deluxe or ultra...The thing thats really bad about these type fakes is the seller has convinced themselves that its not a fake.Because in there mind they feel it is using the same type parts so therefore it is an ultra..
I have seen this at guitar center before were the inexperienced manager got taken and was then on accident going to sell it as an ultra...At least when myself and another player pointed it out he took it off the wall and checked into it...A week or so later it was back up on the wall as a parts caster at a much cheaper price..
It was an excellent guitar but it wasn't an ultra and as we all know there is what about a $500 dollar price difference between an ultra and a parts caster

Notice the use of the tterm wonderful fakes. The only difference is the price tag. Would the yamaha pacifica be termed a tribute? Probably never even the higher end 800series model. Its always going to be termed a strat though.

Well then I guess your pawn shop would go out of business. :P

Personally,, I'd never buy a guitar from eBay. Unless I can play it first and check the thing out with my own two eyes and ears, there's no way I'd buy any guitar. But I'm clearl;y in the minority when it comes to that.

:)
