Edit: I change the subject, as the actual problem was not the pot, but the treble bleed mod, which altered the tapering of the pot.

I bought Lindy Fralin Vintage Hots on a pre-wired pickguard with blender pot. I have not been happy with the volume control, as when you turn it off and start to rotate it on, the volume will raise very quickly in the first 25% and after that not much happens.

I opened the pickguard today and was planning to change the pot with DiMarzio custom taper pot. But I measured the existing CTS pot and DiMarzio pot, and they seemed to be almost the same. What is strange to me, that they seem to be reverse audio taper pots (based on my measurements). I guess that explains why there is quick change in the beginning and after that not much change.

Does anyone know, why they would use reverse audio pots on the volume control? Now it works almost like on/off volume control.

Actually, if you in fact have a reverse taper pot, this is a good thing as it would best serve you as the blender pot. See, with 'normal' taper pots, the blender pot works counter (anti) clockwise with, '10' being fully off and '0' being fully on. So, with the reverse taper, the blender pot's functional direction would then be the same as the other two.

In a direct answer to your question though and again, if they are in fact, reverse taper, apparently and coincidentally, two people either made the same mistake or, if you metered it with a present and intact treble retention circuit, this circuit very often presents erratic resistance readings and erratic taper sweeps.

Thanks Martian. Your doubt about those being actually reverse pots made me to measure them again. It seemed to be my mistake. I had measured the resistance between wrong lugs and also rotating the pot to wrong direction (stupid me). So I got "mirrored" results.

Still the on/off behaviour of the volume control is mystery to me.

Could the treble bleed mod cause this? I'll try to remove it and see what happens.

Yep, it was the treble mod, which altered totally the tapering of the pot. Problem fixed. Thanks Martian, your post lead me to the right direction.

Glad to help.

With 'traditional' output single coil pickups, that treble circuit really isn't appropriate nor particularly useful as you have witnessed first hand.
