Today, I went to my local GC and found several sunburst American Standard Strats. I noticed some were of two piece body and some with three piece body. The weight were about the same, by feel, when I held them. If given a choice between a two piece body and a three piece body, which would you purchase and why? Does one have better sound qualities or even better vintage value in the future?

I guess I would prefer the two piece if all other things are equal. In reality it does not make for a better instrument one way or the other

Two piece for me! I doubt most could really tell between the 2 and 3 piece body tone wise if they were both good tone bodies. It`s just that most of us have been taught that the less pieces the better.I don`t care for the visual aspect of the three piece body.

I like the one piece bodies. Between the options, I chose 2 piece.

Okay, then I won't mention them.

Hi maxoom: I have both. I can't tell the difference, tonewise.

I like pretty pieces of wood.

Cheers - C

Aesthetically, the fewer pieces the better for me. Sonically, I doubt there's much of a difference. One of my guitars appears to have a four-piece body underneath its two-piece maple top, and I don't think I'd notice if it were otherwise. The other is two-piece, but it can't really be seen under the paint job... heh. If I were buying a blonde or a sunburst I'd prefer two-piece.

No difference. I don't like sunburst finishes, so it's not even an issue for me.

In a blind test, nobody would be able to tell the difference in tone.

Well, there is the truth of it. It doesn't matter at all tone wise. I guess if I was making a CS, I would get a one piece just because it would seem more premium...possibly add a little value as a future resale.

I have thought a strat body made of hundreds of pieces of bamboo might make a pretty project, so I am the last person to be afraid of a glue joint.

(I didn't vote). :)

BigJay, you know I can't read and comprehend all of this information in one post. I'll have to come back to it and read a paragraph at a time. I appreciate all of this info though. :) You certainly make an interesting read. Can you save me some work and tell me which you prefer?

JK you know!

That's it! How does the grain pattern look? Is it attractive?

I have examples of all 4: one-, two-, three-, and four-piece bodies. I would not say I can tell any tone difference. Note: I have a couple of Mexican Standard bodies (not assembled into complete guitars) that may be six- or seven-piece!
