Hey guys. Im not too happy with my two point tremolo on my american standard. I would like to use alternate tunings but I cannot due to the fact that my trem is floating. Can I swap out my tremolo for a 6 point tremolo?

Why bother switching? a 6 point tremolo is still going to float
why not block your current trem and see how that works, or tighten the claw and set the trem tight to the body

6 point trems dont float. And If i put the trem flat to the body it wont stay in tune when I dive. For a floating bridge to stay in tune it must be set up parallel to the body.

On my 2 point trem bridge assembly (on a Squier Std actually), I couldn't screw the 2 bridge posts down far enough to make the bridge sit flat on the body. It was still slightly angled back.

But it didn't matter, because once I'd tightened the claw the block was resting tightly against the internal bridge wood routing, even though the bridge itself wasn't quite in contact with the top. I had to raise the saddles a bit, but it's now solid and more tonefull too.

That's news to me. I should have been told that 30 years ago, so that I knew what I was doing wasn't possible.

I have the feeling what you mean by float is different from what many of us mean by float. When it comes to trems, of course.

Im a floyd man. When I say float I mean it can pull up and down. It doesnt rest against the body of the guitar, it floats. Hence the term.

Well, that's what I mean by float. I can raise or lower the pitch with the trem. Here's a "6 point" trem that's as old as they come and it's floating:

Yup. But cant I set it up flat to the body so I cant pull back? Therefor I can drop tune and the trem wont pull sharp?

Sure, you can set up a "6 point" trem to sit flat against the body and only get down trem action. Guys can have it either way. But the same is true of the "2 point" trem that's on the American Standards: you can float them or sit them flat against the body.

Just crank down on the trem claw in the back cavity.

From the pictures I've seen, your guitar seems to have the front edge of the trem way too high ...

It should stay in tune especially if it's set flat to the body. Make sure your nut is well greased. But you gotta realize 6 point tremolos are not really designed for Eddie Van Halen dive bombing. If that's what you want you need a Floyd Rose or a Kahler locking system which looks like a tank is attached to your guitar. Ugh...
