Wow....

When you started this thread title with "...smething weird..."

'Thought you were going to e-talk about Area 51 Strats or String Theory and its effect on tube tone or some cat in Boise which could play hammered dulcimer with its paws.

'AM one of those earlier-referenced, despised ("Model Railroaders" actually, lifelong scale modeler / historian)...who also started playing guitar at 16.

And personally, 'believe there is plenty of everything out there for all of us to dig and marvel at (a spiritual growth stage), for a long time.

Gear
History
Music
Skill Levels
Educational Levels
Physical Health
Ages
Preferred music
Preferred artists
USA-made
Foreign-made
Hand-made
And so on...

...but perchance, "we" are sometimes a wee tad short on maturity and tolerance of other folks' interests and levels of current understanding...

...this picker being as guilty as many.

Slapchop you have never been shy about what you think of Hendrix but as a player it is a lil hard for me to try and understand where you do not see his greatness .OK maybe he is not your cup of tea but you have to get real here it is like you have a vendetta against him. Fact- Hendrix burst upon the seen with a bag of chops not seen up until that time not just some blues licks played on ten. If you analyse his playing you will see he used the minor pentatonic, blues scale,Dorian mode,Aeolian mode plus he probably used the major pentatonic in his playing more than anyone at that time until southern rock hit, and without making it sound country.Plus the way he weaved these scales to follow the changes shows an artist who knew what the hell he was doing. His rhythm playing was as amazing as his lead work with all the embelishments and scale fragments mixed into his chordal work. Even his use of octaves (third stone from the sun) in a rock context at that time has now been driven into the ground. Plus when you are hailed as THE MAN from your peers and the guys who were there Clapton,Beck,Townshend,Trower just to name a few how could you argue with these greats who in there own words were scared they could not compete at the time.As for all these later releases I dont even listen as his family or should I say sister (step sister at that) are releasing any little piece of tape they find on the floor to make money as hardly any of these songs were finished and were just rough takes and ideas that he might of never finished or released. And as far as 59 Gibsons and a lot of other hot vintage axes go I have read enough interviews with enough great players to know a lot of them sound like $@!& and have been sold to collectors who know nothing about tone just brands and years.

The fact that Jimi Hendrix bought probably well over a hundred different guitars. Yet, there are only 7 guitars whose whereabouts are actually known.

Isn't it strange that one of Rock's premier guitarist's gear is actually little known about and scarce? (kind of like his music, nice job Janie...)

Just wondering.

I don't think Hendrix had hundreds of guitars. I have never seen evidence of that number of guitars.... And that is all myth that he burned guitars at his ,as some else said the major shows. I read that happened two times according to Mitch Mitchell (JHE drummer) Astoria, Monterey

What about Royal Albert Hall?

And I wasn't just talking about his Later years. I meant throughout his career.

I don't about that one. I do no that the one that got burned at the Astorisa show is the one that was given to Frank Zappa and the other from Monterey was i kept in a garage by Tony Garland. Thats Like Garland said one of the first white strats that Jimi had belonged to Keith Richards and was given to Jimi by Keith's girl friend while he was playing at Cafe Wha! until then Jimi had a affinity to sunbirst strats.

Remember way back when Frank Zappa was on the cover of Guitar Player magazine with the Jimi burned Strat? I thought I remembered Frank saying that he picked up the pieces form the ground in front of the stage in Monterey, no? :?

Hendrix was supposed to have had a roadie give Zappa a body and a neck while they where at the Underground Pop Festival in Florida it was believed the body was the one that got burned at Astoria and the neck was just and old neck that Hendrix had. Hendrix did not burn a guitar at the Underground Pop and it was never proved that it was the real astoria body though Zappa said it was. Who knows for sure.

I don't know who has what, but I'm pretty sure not even all the pieces of the Monterey strat have been reunited. It was burned, but a lot of people forget it was also literally smashed to pieces, which were then thrown into the crowd. I don't think it was given to anyone.

If someone put that back together, props to them.

As for why so many of his guitars have unknown fates, it's like someone already said: He was a great musician in his day, but the full effect of his career wasn't realized till much later. People weren't documenting where his gear went because he wasn't a legend yet. Besides, people traded around guitars in a way that doesn't necessarily happen so often today. From books I've read, different famous musicians would meet at different gigs and trade around or gift away guitars very casually. Who knows where some of these things ended up. Of course he probably never gave away his number one iconic strats, and that's why we know exactly where most of those ones are.

Well, I was wrong about the Monterey strat for sure. Here is Frank being interviewed in the Jan. 1977 Guitar Player:

"Another one of my Strats is the one Hendrix burned at the Miami Pop Festival; it was given to me by this guy who used to be his roadie. I had it hanging on the wall in my basement for years until last year when I gave it to Rex and said, "Put this sucker back together," because it was all tore up. The neck was cracked off, the bodywas all fired, and the pickups were blistered and bubbled. That's the one that's got the Barcus-Berry in the neck. A lot of people thought I had Hendrix's guitar from Monterey, but it was from Miami; the one at Monterey was white and this one is sunburst."

SlapChop,
How true. My 72 Strat cost $285 with a case. Nobody cared at all. People didn't "need" 5 different Strats to get by. It's a brilliant marketing plan (scam) that Fender has. You don't even need the time to "customize" your Strat because it comes off the line already modified. The only problem is it's not a one of a kind. It's a mass produced guitar that everyone else has. It's not your individual tone. It's pretty sad really that there's no one experimenting any more. I'm glad Les Paul is still alive. At least you can still see an actual inventor every Monday night in NY. I saw him twice and he's awesome. At 93 he doesn't play like he used to, but he's still amazing to see perform.

WOW! What a coiencence. Here today...gone tomorrow. RIP Les Paul.

I've always wanted to see an interview of Hendrix talking about his gear and stuff, but back then it was just like; "Just get the loudest amp" - "You've got an American Strat?!".
Having said that, it wasn't like that for Hendrix really. He did actually care about his amps and stuff (especially nearer to his death) and he oftenly had them modified. He obviously used a fuzz face and Vox Wah too.

And from some replies I've seen about other albums and stuff; Theres lose more stuff than his commercial albums. I've got everything from Electric Ladyland(obvious) to Astro Man to In The Studio to Live At Winterland and more.
