"Cash for Clunkers" = a current USA program to trade in old cars and get a great discount on a new one.

Would you trade in that 20+ year old Strat with the worn frets for a good discount on a new Strat. ?

This could be a win-win situation...Fender offers a great discount and takes your old Strat, puts a new neck on, and sells as road worn specials or something?

Mike, this is not Strat-specific; should it not be in the Lounge?

That said, 'have a Dillion Mosrite copy which would be brought in as trade against an American Jazzmaster or Jaguar.

In answer to your question about the 20+ year old Strat, NO I would not trade it in.

Hi Mike: if you have a very old Strat I might be pursuaded to take it from you in lieu of a discount on a new one.

For example: hand me in a '62 Strat: I'll give you 25 percent off a nice new MIA.

How's that for a cash-for-clunkers deal? Seems fair from my end...

Cheers - C

Isn't something like this has already been happening for years? Aren't there already music stores that take your old guitars for trade in for a newer guitars or gear? Why would this be any different?

New Car Dealerships have been taking trade ins for years too. However the Cash For Clunkers Program is suppose to give you top dollar for your clunker.

If my Strat were a clunker yes I would.

Just like the cash for Clunkers program you guys have (had?) is never gonna net a mint condition :

A guitar Cash for Clunkers isn't gonna net a '54 Strat. But if I could turn in a player that is well past it's prime and use the money to fund a dream guitar, like a down payment on a master built CS guitar, I would have to think about it. I have a couple guitars that, while still playable aren't in the best shape, and won't ever fetch top dollar. I probably keep them more for nostalgia reasons than anything. I really only play 3 or 4 of my axes regularly. The others aren't quite ruined, but they aren't in prime shape, and would probably cost more than the value of a mint one to restore, so they would be bait for sure.

As one that works at a dealership, you know that the trade ins are crushed or shredded, engines locked down. Should they do that with the guitar clunkers? I think not.

a 1989 guitar that did not play well I would do that with no problem if the money was right towards a new one maybe if it even play OK.

And cash fo clunkers for a car is not a trade in because the dealer has to scrap the car and get the money from the Goverment in the amount they gave towards the purchase. Before the dealer can give the car to the scraper the engine has to be destroyed by adding two quarts of sodium silicate to the engine and left to run until KABOOM!!!!
And cash for clunkers is not new they started it in Gemany a while back that is where the idea come from not from our present Goverment. Tthe Gemans have funded it with 7 billion dollars and have found the organized crime has been involved and that some of the vehicles are being sold in Africa. And there is other known fraud foreign and local. The big problem with the program is that it is bringing forward sales that would have been made in the next two years anyway so now when the extra 2 billion that was put in is gone auto sales will plumet lower then before the program. But hey the industry gets 5 months of false hope out of it anyway or more tax payer money since the door has been opened.

So, say you have a well worn '93 Stratocaster that needs fretwork, the pots are scratchy and you're tired of putting money into it and you'd like a change.

If Fender offered you a $400 discount on a new American Standard most of you wouldn't take it?

You got that right, CV. I feel bad for all the salesmen who work on commission. Sure, they're getting a good payday right now, but where will they be in six months when the government money dries up? The perceived benefits of this program are an illusion. This disgusting publicity stunt turns my stomach.

if I had a guitar that was older and not really worth much i might trade it in for something new (not a road worn) *but then again I do that anyhow (must be why i dont have older Strats)

As far as waiting for the "Hot Rod" trade in?....never i paid $435 for my HR Deluxe brand new (yes i got a very good deal for it) $150 for mods ie. pots, input jacks, etc. (it didnt need them but sounds so much better). So thats $585 i have into it.....i wouldnt sell it for nothing (well i would if i could get enough to replace it and have the mods done again and make alittle money for the trouble)

Now hold on there; not so fast. Tell me about this '93 Strat, why don't you?
I feel there's work to be done with that one...
