I had a guitar tech some years ago scrape the neck of my '62 Strat RI with a dulled razor blade. Did the whole neck, got some gunk off. What was it? Shellac, laquer, rubbing compound? I forget what he told me. Looks better, sounds better. Rosewood neck. He did the nut to the first fret right in front of me. There was a big difference. It was too late to say no. Neck looked OK, looked like an acoustic rosewood neck. He was the nutty professor. What he scrape off of there? This wasn't accumulated dirt and grime. The guitar was clean as a whistle. This came from the factory this way. Whaduhya think?

Other that the obvious, and scraping the top layer of dirt, grime, oil and possibly wood stain on the neck, that's about it as far as I can tell.

If you take a new rosewood neck that's dry, it will be on the lighter side. Play it enough, and the sweat, oil and dirt darken and smooth the wood. Most people want this... to a point. Some even stain it to make it look darker and bring out the grain in it, instead of keeping it light colored.

What's the point of the question though? Do you not like what he did? Do you not want it dark? Are you not happy with something and want to change it?

Most here will tell you that the sound difference between rosewood and maple fingerboards is nearly inaudable. Then again, some say they can here the difference. I wish I could.
I like the look of maple as well, and a neck swap shouldnt change your tone very much if at all.

I have a strat with each type. To me, I can hear a difference, even with the same pickups on it and the same amp. The maple sound snappier to me. The rosewood sounds a bit warmer. I like the look and sound of the rosewood much better, but that's just me.

Some people can hear the difference, some can't. They do "feel" a lot different though. The maple feels harder in your hands and has a glossy finish. The rosewood feels softer and has not finish on the fretboard, just a raw wood feel. Part of why I like rosewood better.

I would think with the maple board and the razor he removed the lacquer off the neck so you now had the feel of smooth wood under your fingers (if he dug that deep).
You at best he just removed some of the lacquer and left some behind

With the rosewood board; its already bare wood so at best he would have removed a thin layer of wood, so now your fingers are touching non-rubbed wood.
To the rosewood board lightly add some Fret board conditioner (usually this is just lemon oil but everyone claims that they have magic stuff for fret boards)

Don’t oil the maple neck…

1) I can definetly hear the difference between a maple(bright) and rosewood neck (mellow). 2) I think the tech did mention removing rubbing compound from factory finish.
