Hi acdcrocks2002: More info, please. Do you mean it's buzzing on those frets when the strings are played open, or when you fret notes in those positions?

Cheers - C

Hi acdcrocks2002,
Follow this link and the setup guide to getting your guitar to play nicely. If all that doesn't work, there might be fret issues. Get the tools they talk about and follow every step and don't skip anything.

Before you go splashing out on tools you may never use again fret the low E string at the 1st fret and 15th fret at the same time. Check for a gap between the top of the 8th fret and the underside of that string. If you have a spare .010 gauge high E string you can use it as a very rough feeler gauge to check the distance. Other than that a set of feeler gauges costs £3. If its hitting the 8th fret without you pushing it down you need to loosen the truss rod. 1/4 turn a time is the best ruloe for that thing, dont rush it.
I strongly suspect its a truss/neck relief issue.

Your action should be around 1.5mm to 2mm on the high E and 2.5mm to 3.5mm on the low E for a decent healthy buzz free action. You will only ever get that with the correct neck relief though.

If neither of those things get you results take it to a repair place and get it properly set up.

I bought feeler guages at my local auto part store for under 3 dollars. The ruler I bought at my local hardware store for under 10. In my opinion these tools are worth their weight in gold. If you plan on keeping your guitar or getting more, I strongly encourage anyone to purchase them.

Fender's recommondations in the setup guide are really all one needs unless you are a beginner and aren't comfortable with DIY stuff. Then, like nikininja said, take it to a shop. My guess is that if you're posting here you'd like to troubleshoot and fix the issue yourself. Learning how to setup a guitar is a valuable skill that will save you time and money in the future.

The tools -
Set of automotive feeler gauges (.002-.025) (0.05–1 mm)
6" (150 mm) ruler (with 1/32" and 1/64" increments) (0.5 mm increments)
Light machine oil (3-in-1, toy locomotive or gun oil)
Phillips screwdriver
Electronic tuner
Wire cutters
Peg winder
Polish and cloth

is that the 15th or last fret? because when i do it on mine @ the 15th the relief is spot on, and at the last fret it's about 0.03 " out

the haynes manual and the fender website mention the last fret..

Hi acdcrocks2002: More info, please. Do you mean it's buzzing on those frets when the strings are played open, or when you fret notes in those positions?

Well, Mr acdcrocks2002 hasn't come back yet with an answer to my question, but I'll hazard a guess anyhow.

If the B and G strings are buzzing on low frets when played open then it's probably a nut slot issue.

However, I suspect acdcrocks's strings are buzzing when he frets them, and the fact that it's only on two strings and at the third and fifth frets suggests to me it might not be relief related (because it would show up on more strings and frets) and it's definitely not action.

Two possibilities. If it's a well played guitar then he may have wear grooves developing in the third and fifth frets, making a fretted string sit lower there and so buzz on the next fret up.

If the frets aren't worn then it means frets three and five are too low, or four and six are too high. The only solution to that is to have them redressed - and a visit to the tech is called for unless acdcrocks knows how to do that himself. If not, don't let this be the guitar to learn on.

There's an outside chance of more serious neck issues - but it's very unlikely and anyhow would have to be diagnosed by a tech. We can't spot humps in fingerboards over the internet...

My thoughts.

Cheers - C
