I buy signature models for the specs on those models that cannot be bought elsewhere. The name had nothing to do with it, and I wish sometimes they weren't there. Like my Gibson Slash LP Goldtop and my EBMM John Petrucci.

Luckily, I managed to get 2 sets of Big Dippers separately, so I didn't have to buy the guitar.

Like most players here I don't own a signature model -- and for that matter I have no definitive plans to change that. Of all the artist models offered, about the only one that appeals to me is the Eric Johnson Strat. I've played one, and I was mightily impressed; even though I can't stand most of his music, he did get his name on a great instrument.

The vast majority of other signature models, particularly the relics, seem cheesy. There's an old adage that if your guitar hero's name is on an effects box, then you can be sure that he doesn't use it. Fender peddling artist-endorsed guitars is rather crass in my opinion. I want to be known for having my own guitar that is unequivocally mine, and not for playing an SRV Stratocaster.

I'm not a Clapton fan but never played a fender that plays as good as my 89 Clapton signature strat. Maybe a custom shop but still haven't found one

So for me it's all about the feel and sound not signature part..
But when you play one you know why they are $2000 USD

Earlier this year, I bought an ESP/LTD Max Cavalera signature model. I liked the neck, and despite its crazy appearance (and sickly green colour), I love it. The neck is always the deciding factor for me with any guitar I plan on buying, as pups can be easily changed if they don't suit me.

The point is, I'd never even heard of the guy, and thought that "MC-200" was just the model number (it's written on the inlay on the 24th fret). It wasn't until after I turned up to a jam session with this thing that a mate of mine mentioned Cavalera's name, and the fact that my new guitar was a replica of the one he used to play! I'm not a HM kind of guy, and just wasn't aware of Sepultura or Soulfly until after I got the guitar. I just thought it was a crazy looking guitar with a really comfortable neck.

After reading this thread, I came to realize that I've had a few signature models..the first one was an Ibanez Lee Ritenour, kinda 335 model..it was truly a beautiful guitar, great work by Ibanez..and very playable.
The next was some kind of signature, a Yamaha SG-2000 as used by Carlos at the time.Heavy as h...nice fat tone, too easy to play.
Then I've had a Beck from 2000,and also one from 2006.THEN I came across the Malmsteen models, and have not looked back one second.
Thankfully,I got a scalloppet 72 Strat as main guitar, but the malmsteen models are great as well, made me play like Yngwie from day one. Yeah, right.
The Malmsteens were bought because of the neck and looks, really wanted to try them out, in addition I do have the deepest respect for the man.

Some time ago, 'purchased a Gibson Trini Lopez Standard. Think ES-335 body in Pelham Blue with diamond-shaped soundholes and fretboard inlays and six-on-a-side headstock like a non-reverse Firebird.

At the time, 'was a demi-hippie and Trini Lopez was a torch singer. 'Sure did not buy it to identify with him, tho now really do like lounge music.

'Still have the TL. Outstanding guitar.

In '05, bought a polka-dot Buddy Guy Stratocaster because it looked extraordinarily cool, played unexpectedly well, sounded thoroughly fine. And yes, 'respect Buddy Guy but do not imitate his music; for that matter, rarely ever endeavour to play serious blues. The instrument, however, is a keeper.

You may freely draw your own conclusions upon why those Artist / signature models were purchased by this picker.

There are only two of them that hold any interest for me, and both because of the features.

The EJ maple neck because of that wonderful neck and the specially wound pups.
The Buddy Guy - really just an EC model but in ash and with Gold Lace Sensors instead of VN.

For me, it's the specs.

I bought the Tim Armstrong Hellcat, because I just loved it.
I plan to get the JA-90, mostly because I wanted a TC-90 and it's discontinued.
If I want a hardtail Strat, I pretty much have to buy the Robert Cray sig and so on.

In the case of Gibson, their most popular sig model is the Les Paul. Since ole' Les had most of hits in the early 50s, I doubt that 20 year olds are buying LPs because they love his recordings. It has much more to do with features and quality than the artist.

But when it comes to guitars the name Les Paul has morphed into a guitar itself like Stratocaster or Telecaster not a signature model but the guitar type. Les paul Warren Haynes, Zakk Wylde now there Les Paul siganature models. Other then that Gibson tends to use a decriptive part of the guitar in the name. Type Name=Les Paul+ (flame-reissue-custom-vintage spec) = guitar

I don't currently own any signature models now, but I wouldn't have a problem with owning one in the future. Signature models offer a special combination of specs that usually aren't found on any other model the manufacturer offers.
I know of several people who bought a YM strat, not because they were any fan of Yngwie, but just because they liked the scalloped fretboard and they didn't want to make that mod on any of their other guitars.
Personally, if I like the specs and everything feels right, I'd buy a guitar with anyone's name on it.
