I replaced my stock pickups with Fat 50's and think they sound awesome.

I never use stock pickups. They don't sound nearly as good as my Dimarzio Area 67's and Virtual Vintage 54 Pro.

Nikininja, I've heard people talk poorly about SCNs but my #2 has SCNs in it and once dialed in it sounds very Stratty. I especially like the S1 switch my Amer. Deluxe pairs with the SCNs. Lots of different tones possible.

orvilleowner, I actually played a Road Worn 50's Strat yesterday for a bit and enjoyed the tone. Of course this was plugged into a '65 Deluxe Reverb RI so that cute little Hello Kitty guitar hanging on the wall would have sounded good. One thing I did notice (with the tex mex loaded Strat) was that the treble was a bit icy. With some work it could probably have been eq'ed out but I didn't play it very long as a Sienna Sunburst RW caugt my eye. Almost walked out with her but I really want one with a maple neck.

Hi there.

#1 Strat is a Highway 1 (upgraded), with a full set of Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro flat pole. Found the stock alnico 5s to be spiky and without much body. Tried a set of SCNs first and didn't like them.

#2 Strat is Classic 60s MIM Strat with stock p/ups

#3 Strat is much modded Squier std series with SD alnico 2 pro staggered pole and SD 'lil59 stacked humbucker in the bridge.

I'm curious to see how many people remove the stock pickups and replace them with an aftermarket pup. I put a set of Custom '59 Copperhead pups in my #1 after 11 years simply to inspire me to play more and also to check out a new set of pups in my Strat. Needless to say I was very happy! Cpperheads are not that expensive ($145US) and are made entirely by hand (except the winding machine) and sound wonderful. Plus the fellow who makes Copperheads has several more models plus he will work with you to build your own pickup from the ground up. He will also provide a full refund even if you cut the wires while installing them. Sorry I know this sounds like a commercial but I'm just very happy with his product. I'm even comptemplating changing out the SCNs in my Amer. Deluxe for a set of '67s although I dig the stock SCNs. Anyway, have any of you changed out your stock pups for an aftermarket set and been very happy with them. I'd like to hear about the pups and, if you can, compare them to a sound (or band) we'd be familiar with please. If you've made the change and are unhappy with them please advise us also.

Russ

Good to see another fan of Copperheads! I bought mine because I was looking for an upgrade for my #1, and living in Canada, I wouldn't have to worry about any cross-border issues. Plus, $150 US is really cheap for a set of top-of-the-line pickups.

I went with the 1962s, and chose RWRP mid and balanced output. I'm really happy with these pickups. These are the darkest of the standard Copperheads, at about 6.2k for the neck. They sound fantastic, and the slightly-higher/darker-than-standard-vintage output hasn't affected the chime/quack in positions 4 and 2. Great blues tones in the neck and middle!

If I ever get another Strat, I'd strongly consider his 1954 set, to compare the other end of the spectrum.

I use a set of Rumplestiltskin pickups. Called "Gypsy". Really a good sounding pickup.
