Wow, I'm so interested in the posts people are making here. Very thought provoking.

Once you've replaced the strings, place the guitar flat on your lap. With both hands side by side, gently and evenly push down on all 6 strings until the strings are gently and simultaneously touching all three pickups' magnets for their respective string. Now, gently and ever so slowly and evenly, start relieving the hands pressure until the strings have been restored to their natural position.

Martian, I believe I've seen you talk people through this procedure before. I for one am hazy on the theory side of it: be most grateful for anything else you felt like saying on that...? 8)

It is to synchronize the magnetic flux of the 18 polepieces. As it stands, they are all currently each doing their own thing thereby creating an erratic magnetic field. This in turn, has varying effects on each string and fret. The magnets will then all work in unison as one, thereby eliminating the varying tonalities per string/fret. This remedy also eliminates the infamous, "Stratitis".

Excellent, thank you!

Though you know there's now a lot of folks out there scratching their heads over "Stratitis"...

PS: Anyone agree - I think threads like this are the Forum at its best?

Cheers - C

You're quite welcome!

They'll know eventually about "Stratitis" as it's not just limited to Strats.

I noticed this G note dissonance and just kind of assumingly attributed it to vibration of the tremolo springs. My solution was to pack little foam earplugs inside the springs. It dampened their vibration considerably. The G string vibrates normally and when I tap on the guitar the spring twang is gone. YMMV, of course, but it seems to have helped my strat.

(I used two foam earplugs per spring, one on each end.)

First rate thread, lots of stuff to explore: equalizing magnets, earplugs in the springs (in addition to the audience ears), G string gauge, thanks to all!
