I'd say they sound a lot like a 1969, but maybe with a tad less highs (due to a bit higher inductance).

That's based on the average info listed here http://www.provide.net/~cfh/pickups.html

The early '60's are a bit hotter and warmer than other vintage guitars.

This guy is good. I hate it when people make it look so easy. Gotta go for now and practice.

'Have heard it said often, the modern MIMs (Standards) are a lot like the 1950s guitars. 'Have played a couple and that sounds good, convincing, here, but then, 'ain't got "dog ears" which can hear those mega-subtle nuances.

'Really envy those guys who can listen to a rig and say with assurance, "Hmm, his mid pickup has 7 less windings than the bridge, and the plates on the #3 6L6 power tube are ready to start sounding bad."

Yeah, sure. Envy but 'am not able to do that. "Close" and "pleasing to these ears" are good enough.

Damn, I'm going to have to get myself a sidekick to video my every move just in case I do something amazing... and while I'm about it, I would like a minstrel to follow me around and immortalise my deeds in song!

The video with the '54 did sound nice, but it could be any Strat really after it's been through that lovely YouTube compression. All I could tell was that he knows his way around a guitar — I'd get very nervous with an axe of that price in my hands.

Here's a comparison (YouTube, again) between a '54 Strat and a Custom Shop '54, where there are differences to be heard, but the overriding feeling I'm left with is that I want a '54 Fender of some description... heh. I wish I had the guts to go down the road and try out that '54... they sold the one in the video, but another has come in since then. They say that anyone is welcome to drop in and play any guitar in the shop...

There are a lot of people who claim to be able to hear things others can't, but they don't back it up. People aren't doing blind testing that would tell the truth. Most people can't even tell the difference between tube amps and solid state, although many claim they can. It's like wine tasting. Most people just know what they like and that's it.

Mondo i could barely hear the difference. Its certainly no more different than a 05 compared to a 06. No two guitars sound identical.

Ah, yeah, when I said that there "are differences to be heard," I meant that they were very small ones... heh. Whether it means that the Custom Shop totally nailed the '54 (which I could well believe), or just that Strats in general sound good... couldn't say. I wouldn't say no to a masterbuilt '54, though.
