Man that guy who purchased it 13 years ago for $3000 is one lucky bastard. Now that strat is valued at $60,000???? Man, I wish I purchased some really old strats back then when I had the chance when they were a little more affordable.

Is 0047 the 47th made? Surely that reasoning makes gilmours 0001 the first one made. I didnt think there was much rhyme or reason to the serial no's of the first couple of years of strats.

I was also surprise that the appraiser did not mention removing of the neck and pickguard for date markings. I read that determing year of make just on the neck plate marking may not be accurate.

No doubt someone more 'in the know' than I will clarify things.

I watched this when it originally aired mind blowing. I have seen about 5 guitars that were worth huge sums on this show.

Hi bluesguitar65: he's just doing a quick summary run through for a short TV clip, and for an audience that mostly aren't too terribly fascinated about marks on neck heels and such.

At least, I presume that's it. Otherwise... someone give me that guy's address! I seem to have several Strats he's going to value high - or I can have very quickly. It's easy to get a neck plate made with any number you choose stamped into it. Was looking at someone offering that service on the internet just the other day...

BTW: I love the look of surprise on Mr Whiteshirt's face when the price comes out. Yeah right, like he didn't know already! They merely spent three grand on it a few years ago cos they thought the color was mighty purtty...

Cheers - C

I've seen that show on local PBS stations and I think that they have a few of these type of auctions to get more people interested in donating and becoming a contibuting member?

Everyone knows that Fender did not apply the numbered neck plates in perfect order.

In fact, the first 100 or so had their serial number stamped on the plastic trem cavity cover. Then they started over with the numbering when they switched to the neck plate. After about serial number 1200, the Strat neck plate serial numbers jumped about 5000 numbers, into the 6000's, to bring the numbering into line with other guitars (supposedly). Whatever the reason, one does not see strats with serial numbers between about 1200 and 6000! (My '54 has a 10XX number, BTW)

Told ya someone more knowledgable than I.
From what we saw of that 54 its not too far away from yours condition wise. So atleast you get a ballpark figure.

Hi Ceri...The appraisers and auctioneers on this show have lots of time to scrub the crowd for gems before the filming begins. Once they find something special, they corral the owner in the back, examine the object closely and begin interviewing the owner. They have lots of time for at least an initial, but robust examination. However, its questionable whether he might have dismantled that guitar to properly authenticate it.

It doesn't seem like he took it apart. That looked like one of the less in depth interviews that they do. I have seen them talk about guitars on that show where it's clear that they did take a look "under the hood" before they went on camera.
