I've physicaly seen pre 21C deluxes with that setup and i know those specs go into the 21st century too. Not sure when it changed to S1's though. My 04 has s1. Was just under the hood changing the neck tone to a blender pot and the scn pickups have revisionD stamped on them. Dunno if that has any bearing on anything.
Heres the blender schematic, far better than s1 and yes i do love the s1 setup.

Easy mod thats well worth doing. Gives you all3, neck and bridge, and you can vary how much of the neck pickup is in the mix. Far better than a on/off switch.

Paul.
Its a 98. Nothing wrong with no s1 on that guitar. With the serial D is for deluxe N is for Ninety, a Z means its from 2000 on. 8 is for... well 8. American standards/highways dont have the D and begin N or Z. Mexican guitars have a M before a N for ninety or Z for 2000 American. Vintage reissues begin with V but dont have any kind of numbering to denote year that i can figure out. I dont have a clue about japanese instrument dating either.

Hope that helps you, enjoy that guitar mate.

My 1999 Deluxe Fat Strat came w/o the S1 switching. I personally would rather not have it- it's just much more simple circuit and changing pickups is easier without it. Love my guitar by the way! Changed the block and saddles to Callaham and changed my neck p/u to the Suhr F/L. Sounds and plays almost too good- I'm not worthy!!
