guys, where can i buy big dipper pickups?
Try ebay or craigslist. Fender does not sell it alone.

Hey Nong, notice you are from the philippines. Any good Filipino players there? I've seen this guy on youtube and many filipinos say he is a legend.

What do you all think?

the story behind it all will actually be one of the topics on the DVD included with "The Black One".

the main reason, in a nutshell:

1. because he has a huge fanbase

2. he is the biggest blues guitar hero of our generation

3. he knows what it takes to produce a good sounding instrument

4. people will buy it

I'm glad I bought mine, it is my main instrument apart from my '62RI, my tele, and my personal TBO replica.

all the mayer-haters can go screw themselves or just get over it.

I like you! LOL

Mayer is the full package. If you haven't seen him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32GZ3suxRn4
An album or so a year since 1999. Would be different if he wasn't writing and composing his own hits.

After watching a bunch of his vids just now.I am declining to comment so I don`t get banned.

Yes he does have a lot of slow acoustic "chick songs"... the ones that pay the bills, but I'm sure Eric Clapton wouldn't invite with the the crossroads guitar festival if he couldn't play... though I didn't find his performance that impressive. At 1:35 in this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wboRCKJW ... re=related he does reveal that he is capable of playing guitar, which you can't tell from his acoustic ballads you watched on youtube that highlight his irritating breathy voice.

I will always love his first song " No Such Thing".... so good (it is on acoustic). I just bought his first album from someone on ebay for $2 after listening to samples- it is in the mail right now so I'm looking forward to seeing what I think. I heard his new album when I had a membership to napster last month. It was okay... but I didn't remember to listen to it a second time.

AWESOME! Thanks for posting that.
This reminds me of a John Mayer interview I was reading in a guitar magazine in 2002 where he says that he was basically an SRV wannabe or impersonator and he finally realized he needed to come up with his own style... you can tell he's got the SRV/Hendrix rhythm skills in all those tasty little licks he throws in.

I think I will go buy that song now!

Slow Dancing is a definent staple in his arsenal. If people like it, I usually then suggest they listen to Belief, Perfectly Lonely, Vultures, and Who Did You Think I Was. The list goes on

That clip is from "Where the light is" DVD check it out.
2hr30mins long he does 3 shows in one. Opens with all his acoustic ballads, plays a set with the John Mayer Trio and then performs with his full band. All good stuff I cannot think of a song I don't like on it.

People shouldn't really knock his acoustic pop stuff so much. For instance the song 'St Patricks Day' shows a beautiful Jazz chord progression that people don't automatically realize is there.

And as a blues guitarist I fail to see how he is merely above average, he is a clever guitar player and fun to listen to.
Joe Bonamassa is a better player, but I prefer John because he combines a great song writing ability with his playing. I am a fan of blues music, but still I think Joe's songs can be quite dull alot of the time.

Oh and John somehow managed to improve the already amazing solo that existed in Hendrix's Bold As Love.

If you ask me he deserves his own signature model, and lets be honest alot of these other modern blues guitarists aren't well known enough to sell as many models as John can, it does always boil down to money in the end.

Just in case anyone is still interested in the reason this thread was started in the first place. I started a thread like this before and eventually got an answer from Fender by email and this is what they said.

It’s a Signature Edition model. Those serial numbers do not follow any particular schemes like the regular models. The serial numbers are printed in numerical order, but not applied in order. There is no way to determine a date just by looking at the serial number.

I guess you have to take it apart and look in the neck pocket to really find out the date.
