I just bought a great used John Mayer Strat. Can anyone help me with the serial number on the neck plate. I'm just curious about the year it was built.
Thank you

Ah, yes, there's that little issue.

ceri performs psychic guitar identification, perhaps we could try that too?

You can't always tell the year a guitar was built by just looking at the serial number. Sometimes you need to look at the neck date.

That's for sure.

There are dates all over the parts of current Strats: pickguard, pots, neck, body ...

the JM Serial will not indicate the date of production. not to mention it isn't has to guesstimate since the model has only been around since '05. now, if it is a certain color besides Ol. White and Sunburst, I can tell you exactly when it was produced.

Shoreline Gold models were produced from 2005 to 2006.

Charcoal Frost Metallic models were a limited run of only 100, in 2005.

Cypress Mica was limited to only 500 pieces, and was produced in 2007 (I own #411)

any questions?

the story behind it all will actually be one of the topics on the DVD included with "The Black One".

the main reason, in a nutshell:

1. because he has a huge fanbase

2. he is the biggest blues guitar hero of our generation

3. he knows what it takes to produce a good sounding instrument

4. people will buy it

I'm glad I bought mine, it is my main instrument apart from my '62RI, my tele, and my personal TBO replica.

all the mayer-haters can go screw themselves or just get over it.

I`m not a JM hater.I kinda like his music.I was being serious. He is a soft voiced sultry singer songwriter with average guitar skills at best.He has done very well for himself.Chicks really love that kind of music,I can see why he is so popular.
There are however legions of really great loyal Stratocaster players out there with much better playing skills than JM.

And nothing I said was in reference to whether the JM strats are good or bad.I`m sure they are really nice models.

My honest opinion probably was better kept to myself.I`m new here and I detect a bit of aggravation there must have been previous JM wars around here?
peace everyone peace

average at best, i think hes above average but anyway.
just check out where the light is. jump the acoustic part.
go straight into the trio section. if you still think hes average, ill respect that.
i honestly think he deserves his own sig strat.
but i will say one thing,
I think Jeff Healey is way past overdue with his own sig strat.
