I've always used Monster Prolink Rock cables for connecting my guitar, amp, and pedals. I recently tried a Horizon cable to connect my Strat to my amp (no other connections) and was blown away by the sound. The Horizon cable was not effected anymore than the Monster by interference. The Horizon had a more balance output with a nice high mid treble heavy curve that didn't forget the bass while conversely the Monster cable was somewhat muddy on bass but provided a high lower freq. mid peak and then almost forgot the treble frequencies. Now these are just my sorry ears listening to this and making this assesment so maybe many will hear things differently. I for one will no longer spend 2 to 3 times of what I would spend on Monster cables since I can purchase Horizon cable for 1/2 to 1/3 the price and I definitely think they sound great for my purposes. Horizon Music Cables also carry a lifetime warranty similar to the Monster line of cables.
Just curious what kind of cable/leads you guys use with your Strats and what you think about the Horizon brand.

Interesting thread. When I first got into stereo equipment monster was my choice for speaker cables. So when I started playing electric guitar it was a natural choice. I am very disappointed in the Monster guitar cables. I agree, it muffles the bass. The whole spectrum just sounds stuffy.

Bob Dylan was once quoted as saying he hated the new cables. The old ones were more lively. Too much technology can be a bad thing. Keeping it simple can sometimes be the best. It's interesting to me that you can hear a difference. I can as well.

I wouldn't buy a Monster Cable for anything that I own and I never have. They are the most over priced and over hyped cables out there for all types of electronic equipment. The stores like Best Buy sure like to try and sell them to you though since they must be a high profit item, just like their extended warranties are. I use a Planet Waves Cable which seems to work great. JMHO :D

I use Fulltone cables, and when there's nothing between my guitar and my amp except a couple of those and an effect pedal the sound is wonderful. I've not compared them to other brands of a similar or higher price... they were just the ones I upgraded to when I decided I should get myself some decent cables for a change.

I do need to get some better patch leads for my other pedals, though, as there doesn't seem to be much point stumping up the cash for some nice cables and then leaving unnecessary weak links in the chain. I seldom get to plug everything in at once, anyway.

I couldn't really offer a meaningful critique of the Fulltones... they seem durable, the ends won't come unscrewed by jiggling them around, they're shielded in such a way that there's minimal radio frequency noise without seeming too clinical. The overall sound through them seems more mellow and stronger on the mids, so I've bumped my amplifier's tone knob up half a notch to compensate. Good cables, in my opinion. I've noticed that they're usually to be seen going in/out of the pedals in the Pro Guitar Shop gear demo videos, so someone else seems to like them.

Russ ( Deadahead ) hope your well today my friend. You have taught me that there is a big difference in cables leads and never realised that quality can affect sound. I currently have 3, 2 litlle scrawny things which work ok I think and a high quality one real thick called a Beldon. It has on both ends yellow rubber casing that goes about 2 inches past the jacks and is very tough too. The thicker leads are great because even if you step on them or an amp sits on it etc they keep going, I have had it for about 15 years and it still works. Beldon, hahhahaha pay me Beldon I am advertising for you guys.

I use planetwaves too. Nice and clear sounding little interferance and their as durable as a brick wall. I had to trim 2" off the end of mine that i've had for 4 years now. Thats the only problem i've ever had with em. That was painless too. Undo a screw, pull the lead out, cut the 2" off, insert the lead into the plug (just push it in) and tighten the screw.
I can do that on a dark stage in under a minute and a half, but ive gone wireless for live anyhow.

Snowy72 got a cable free from elixir, he compared it to the £75 cable he got with his gilmour strat (cant remember what gilmour uses) and reported little difference. Could be worth looking at.

George L's.

Low capacitance, easy assembly, great signal. Or you can buy low-cap Belden cable and Switchcraft plugs and wire your own.

Friends don't let friends buy Monster.

DG uses evidence cables Nik, it's a fine cable. It was the guys in the guitar store, that turned me on to elixir cables. And as you've already said, I didn't hear much if any difference. Here's what elixir have to say about their cables... " Do cables really impact guitar tone?" Cables can distort the sound of your guitar by pushing the mids up and turning the highs down. Elixir cables features a unique cable technology that fixes this problem by delivering the lowest capacitance and truest voice of your guitar.
All I can say is, I have two of them, and they work for me.

I use a Monster Pro Speaker cable. All my guitar and F\X patch cables are George L's. I use an old 18' Whirlwind for my Marshall channel footswitch when I'm jamming with friends. I generally don't use it at home, I'm always on the classic 800 crunch (OD2 on my DSL50).

As long as it makes noise come out of my guitar into the miracle of an amp, I use it.
Without sounding smart, Fender and Whirlwind ones seem to work for me. Fender ones don't last long though.

I use Yorkville cables. Frankly, I can't be bothered to investigate the minutiae of high-priced cables; the Yorkvilles sound fine to me.

Well there you go, despite owning a £75 cable that came with his DG strat, Snowy bought 2 elixir cables.

Sounds well worth investigating to me.
