I am and have been completely lost in people's appeal to the Road Worn series Strat, it makes no sense to me. Can someone explain the attraction to me? It seems like the fad with denim jeans where people buy jeans that are torn and falling apart for the look, and then have to replace the jeans relatively quickly. Are these guitars like this? I just wonder about how these guitars will stand against time, and what the appeal of buying a beat up looking guitar is.

ok im done ranting  just not a fan of these guitars, at all.

It's a placebo effect.

The relics feel like an old well-loved axe.

I too was sceptical about the worn or relic jobs on guitars, but after playing one, I was impressed by how it plays and feels. I've also compared the american made relic guitars and I can say that the mexican road worn plays and feel very close. Obvious difference is the setup. The American made relics are much better setup.

These road worn strats are my only Mexican made strats I ever owned, and at $499 each, which IMHO is a fair price for them, it was hard to pass up, since an actual American Relic is about $3000.

I suggest trying one out if you haven't yet.

You did get good prices on yours. I just can't go the relic thing. I wear mine myself. Good luck with yours bro. 8) Mike

Why should there even be for "finally speaks out" attitude? Why should there even be a debate over why someone would choose a relic over a new looking instrument? With that mentality, then should there also be a debate over the finishes or colors of the guitar? Why not also start debate over types of fingerboards while at it?

Bottom line is Fender offers it, and they offer it because there is a market for it, other people want it. Maybe not you, but others do..

I seem to recall a lot of debates about finishes and colors, fingerboards, pots, strings you name it.

Some people just like to start arguments. And, some people just like to argue (guilty). In the end, people buy the guitars they want. And really, I have some cheap guitars I love, and I don't really care who doesn't like them. They don't have to play them.

I just thought of something else about Road Worns. When you finally DO put that first ding in your guitar, I bet it's a LOT less devastating than it is with a shiny New American Standard.

So, (im not trying to be a smart $@!) if you buy 2 road worn strats, do the look the same? or is the "relic" done differently from guitar to guitar

No pun taken. On my other thread, "second roadworn arrived", I posted pics showing similarities and differences between the road guitars, primarily with the roadworn with serial number starting with MZ8 and MZ9. The early production roadworns have a different relic job on the back of the neck compared to the later MZ9 roadworns. Its hard to show it on my pics, but when you actually see both guitars in person, the MZ8 has a little more relicing throughout the body with smaller nicks and checking of the finish. The fingerboard is also different in color. The three tone sunburst, MZ8, has more red to the color and the dot markers are in the brownish or reddish color. The olympic white, MZ9, has a darker fingerboard and a lighter dot marker. Tonewise, both guitars sound identical, same tex mex pickups.

I bought the second one because I had a G.A.S and the $499 price with free shipping and no sales tax was pretty hard to pass up, for me. No regrets, and happy with the both purchases. Now, I'll see if MF would sell an American Standard for $749 tomorrow's Friday Fender Special.
