Well, my second roadworn 60s strat arrived today, and was lucky to get a great playing one. Its the older or first run MZ8 serial number series. My olympic white 60s road worn is the later MZ9 serial number series which is not as relic'd as the MZ8. There is a big difference on the back of the neck, the MZ8 relic is more natural looking than the MZ9 which looks like someone just sanded off the entire finish from the back of the neck. The MZ8, the three tone sunburst has a fatter C neck than the MZ9. I think Fender is beginning to cut corners on the newer roadworn as evident on the MZ9.

Also, the fingerboard color is different. The sunburst, mz8, has more of a red color than the oly white, mz9. The dot markers are also different. The sunburst has clay look to it, while the olympic white has a lighter dot color.

So far I'm happy with both purchase, hell for $499 each, not bad. Better than paying $1000, I would never pay for that price.

Just gave a closer inspection of the three tone suburst, and it shows that it is a two piece alder. I wonder if the olympic white is a two piece. Also, just informed by Fender, that the road worn bodies are not veneered.

great!

It looks like you better play them a lot to get the backs of the necks dirty!

Then they'll look authentic!

I will, and will not wash my hands until the back of the necks get dirty. What do you say about the relicing job of the back of the necks though? Which one in your opinion looks like a bad dremel job?

It almost looks like the pick guard on the white Strat looks like the Antigua Strat's scratch plate.

I'll be damned... so you think it owuld be good for me to buy the 60s Ol. White 60s at GC. it is also from the MZ8 line, one of the lower serial #s. I just fell in love with it! and at 844, it still is cheaper than elsewhere. so yes?

Well, if you liked that guitar from GC, then you should tell them that you saw the same guitar at Musiciansfriend.com for $749 with free shipping and no sales tax. Bring a printout, and they should match or beat the price.

Congrats on the new guitar. They look like they have the same general pattern with the relicing. Hope you have fun with it.

I don't know if I'd call it a bad dremel job, but the wear pattern on the sunburst doesn't look like any real wear pattern I've ever seen. The other is quite naked, which does happen, but it's a bit over the top.

Both necks just look too freshly sanded IMO. No worked in dried flaked skin (think of the black crud that can accumlate on maple fretboards ... at least that's what accumulates on my fretboards).

I got my new Fender Road Worn 60's Strat today as well. It is a great little guitar, and well worth the $499 I paid. In fact, I saved so much money I ordered a genuine Tweed Fender case to store it in. It's a great looking combo, but more importantly, the guitar just plays and sounds awesome. :D

If they were veneered, the edge of the veneer would show on that top contour bare spot --- which would really look bad!

Although it sure looks like most of the back contour on that sunburst is painted black ...

You got me worried there. So I rushed to my sunburst road worn to check again, and was relieved, well I hope I'm seeing it right. Would you confirm? Would you also confirm if it is infact a two piece body from what the pics show?

That picture of the back looks better; the contour isn't completely blacked out.

It does look like a two-piece, but it can be real hard to see seams in a picture!

They look good. I prefer the 60's 3-tone Sunburst myself. If I was going to get a Road Worn Strat that would be the one I would choose. I've noticed that the Olympic White Road Worn does not look like Olympic White. It's too white. Looks more like Alpine White to me.

Yeah it's a 2 piece, I can see the seam. Don't worry about it I don't think you can even get a one piece unless you get a custom shop. If I would ever buy another Strat I would get the 50's Roadworn. I like the feel and look is ok too.
