I'm pretty sure I have the solution for you - The Boss SD-1 Super OverDrive...

That's fine. But I prefer the sounds of the OD-1 (and -2). More raunchy - and that pedal has hidden powers too:

Ceri, Did you modify the OD1 yourself, because mine won't do that.

:D Hi filerj: it's a specialist Keeley mod, known as the "Strange Brew". Available here:

tsk, tsk — quoting myself; that's terrible...

I gather we've established that boutique is not the way you want to go, but I was digging around after I posted those reverb pedals.

There's another pedal that's often mentioned together with the Mr Spriggy and the Spring Chicken: the Hermida Reverb. Seems like another good one ($99, much cheaper than Mr Hermida's other offerings).

Turns out the reason these three get lumped together is because they're all based on the Belton BTDR-1H Reverb Module. Lee Jackson has said in an interview that he modifies the Belton brick before it goes into the Mr Springgy, and it sounds like the Malekko people probably do the same. The Hermida uses it unmodified (as far as I can tell through my limited reading) and Hermida Audio Technology sells a D.I.Y. version through General Guitar Gadgets for $65.

There's a schematic included at the Belton link — designer Brian Neunaber has allowed it to be distributed freely. If you're electronically minded (sadly, I'm not, but I think it's looking like time I learned) you could probably build yourself a fantastic-sounding pedal for about $30. Maybe I should make it a project and sell the Mr Springgy if it works out... :)

I have a lot of Boss pedals and have been very satisfied with them. And in addition to sounding good they are built strong.

Im wondering what brands yall would reccommend for a distortion or maybe reverb pedal. Kinda new to the techy aspect of everything......

thanks guys

I'm going to reiterate a few of the comments here in that if you're just learning, don't spend a lot of money yet. As with guitar and amps, everyone has their own personal favorite pedal which may or may not be right for you. If you were to buy every single suggestion that's been posted here (or that will be posted afterwards), as Ninja says, you could easily end up spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Personally I'm a classic rocker too and I've been playing for well over 25 years now. In that time, I've owned or played virtually every major make of distortion pedal out there. In fact, I own quite a few vintage effects ranging from Electro Harmonix "Pi", DOD American Metal, Ross "Distortion", etc., and to be perfectly honest the pedal I use right now more than anything is my Digitech RP-50! It's easy to use, it's convenient and it sounds decent. What's more is being a classic rocker who does a pretty wide range of material (covers), my RP-50 gives me lots of flexibility when it comes to sound for the various tunes...in other words, I don't have to switch pedals around every few tunes to get the sound I want....I just setup everything as patches in advance (maybe tweaking them a little as I play) and I can just click thru the patches to what I need.

For an experienced player, the single most important aspect of ANY pedal is simply the "tone" but as with guitars and amps, that's a VERY subjective thing. As I've said so many times in the past, what may be perfect for one person will complete suck to the next. So that said, I have 2 suggestions for you. Number one, get off the internet and get into your nearest guitar shop and play as many pedals as you can so you can HEAR the difference as apposed to folks talking about it on a web forum. What I or anyone else says here is completely irrelevant...only YOUR EARS will be able to decide what's right for you. Number two, if you still can't decide, get yourself a decent multi-effects unit such as the Digitech RP series (or POD or Zoom...lots of folks make them now) and work with that until you have a better understanding of what you're truly looking for.

Good Luck!
Jim

Boutique pedals are the best, without a doubt, but this thread was for a beginner who wanted to know more about gear. It's a confusing world as there are tons of little boutique companies with heaps of different models.

Agreed. But the Fulltone OCD is nearly an industry standard as far as overdrive pedals are concerned for classic rock/blues rock. The boutique world is very confusing at times, for sure.
Fulltone OCD pedals are great, gut claiming it an industry standard iin overdrive s exaggeration. The Ibanez tubescreamer, TS808 and TS9 has by far surpassed the OCD as the industry standard in overdrive, as it is the Ibanez TS is the overdrive pedal that all overdrive pedals are compared to. When reviews of new overdrive pedals are done, there will always be a comparison to the tubescreamer mentioned in the review.....always. So that in it self proves the Ibanez tubescreamer as the industry standard in overdrive, the grand daddy of all overdrives.

This will sound strange but I can get a lot of sounds from my Electro Harmonix Metal Muff. It has a ton of EQ possibilities. Play one when you can.

Boss Fdr 1... Its modeled after Fenders 65 Deluxe Reverb amp. It has a wee bit of gain, but the vibrato/tremolo sound great.

2 good priced magical reverb pedals:

Boss/Fender FRV - for really good 'not quite hi fi' raunchy spring reverb simulations

Digitech Hardwire Reverb - for a range of almost studio quality Lexicon reverb sounds

As for Overdrive - well, you'll spend a lifetime exploring that one. If you're on a budget, start with the ridiculously good Digitech Bad Monkey (don't be put off by the pocket money price!)
