Hey there - first post!

Anyway, I'm getting back into playing after several years away. I've pretty much settled on a Strat, but I love Tele twang - and two guitars are not an option yet.

So here's my question - in your opinion, what currently available Strat comes closest to the sound of a Telecaster, or at least leans in that direction? Just two restrictions:
It must have a tremolo (otherwise, I could just get a Tele!)
It should be available new for under $800. (so much for the VG)

I'll still try out a few guitars before I buy, naturally, but I'm just trying to narrow things down a bit.

Thanks!

I guess it all depends on what type of tele twang your looking for, there's soo many different twangy tones out there. Just a regular standard strat with single coils will get you pretty close to tele twang. Use the bridge or bridge/middle positions through a very clean amp with alot of reverb and alot of presence. The bright switch on fenders seems to get it alittle thinner

If your looking for old country style twang, then you need to learn some chicken pickin'. Chicken pickin' is actually where the twang comes from, you can do this to just about any type of guitar and make it sound twangy. If you pop a string against the fret of your guitar you will hear the twangyness of it. That's basically all it is. Tele's and twang go together so good because of how thin the tele can sound.

There's this guy at a country music hall that I've been frequenting lately and he plays one of those 51 squiers with the humbucker in the bridge through a peavey amp of some sort and he can get pretty twangy with that thing, it actually sounds good.

Hope this information helps ya some.

Thanks for your reply - especially the info about twang. I think my question about Telecaster tone assumes that they sound wildly different from Strats. Maybe what I'm mostly hearing is the differences between twangy and not-so-twangy players?

I suppose the best answer is to take the other players out of the equation and try a bunch of Strats myself until I find the sound I want, right? Oh well, sounds like I've got a rough afternoon in my future.

You might want to take a look at that Gretsch that everyone is selling for 599, I think it has a tremelo and from what I read some serious twang.

Good luck with your choices.

Actually, that's a pretty sweet guitar; maybe that could be my second. (well, second good guitar, since I have this old '60s Kay electric that's been almost unrecognizably modified, but that's another story...)
But I'm definitely looking for a Strat this time.

You can take Deluxe Player Strat, it has some good features, like 7 diferent tones, so you can actualy get Tele tone with combination neck and bridge picup at the same time:

Well, I guess a simple answer to your question will be: Yes, a strat definetly does have enough twang. Your playing style will determine just how twangy that strat will be.

Now if you were planning on becoming a full on country twangmaster that would make James Burton stop and listen, then I would say forget the strat, get a tele, bottom line.

I'm basically going through the same thing myself. I'm currently trying to find a 69 thinline to try out, but I'm afraid the hollowness of it will take away from that thin country twang I'm looking for. I might have to settle on a 50's classic tele.

You could always get a Tele with the Bigsby that way you have both the Trem and Full Tele Twang.

Yeah, maybe you should think about that too.

the hellecasters " Jerry Donahue" strat has a tele-voiced bridge pickup
by Seymour Duncan. it is a strat with tremolo.
but this strat is no more in production, maybe you can check with Seymour Duncan if the pickup is still available....

I do not know too much about it because I have never tried it myself... but I have seen "bass plates" that screw in with your pickup and sit on the bottom and if you put it on your bridge pup it is supposed to give you that tele twang. I am not sure what they are made out of but I would think it effects the magnet in some way to give that telecaster sound. I ran a google search pretty quickly (Im at work about to close) and couldnt find anything but trust it is out there somewhere.

Try a Electro Harmonix Knock-out pedal. It is advertised to make a Strat sound like a Tele. I think it does a pretty good job.

Thanks for all your replies - this thread carried on quite a bit longer than I expected.

I went to my local GC this weekend to try out a few Strats and, ironically, discovered that the specific Tele sound wasn't quite as important to me as I thought.
(Everything from this point on is strictly my opinion...)
The Deluxe Players' plays nice and looks fantastic, but I thought the Noiseless pickups sounded a bit dull. On the Highway One, I couldn't get past the huge frets. I ended up really liking both the MIM Standard (maple fretboard) and the Jimmie Vaughan, but I was a bit disappointed that the JV's pickguard was warped (the only real quality problem I saw on any Strat I looked at), and I can do that tone mod myself. I liked the sound of both the standard and Tex Mex pickups, but I couldn't hear a huge difference myself - maybe I'm getting old.

So it looks like I'll be picking up a MIM Standard.
