[quote="JWinVegas"]Fender Stratocaster Eric Clapton Signature guitars.

Long story short. I had it out with this guy weeks ago via private email. I commented on same in the Forums. My '89 Pewter is SE900891. I haven't had the neck off but I expect that I'll do it some time. Neck end date and body date plus numbers on pots etc are the binding tie.

The vendor sat firm on his position. I told him he is going to sit with it because the knowledgeable know better, and that I was going on the Forums about this guitarl. He wasn't too happy about that.

So far, I've not been wrong. I expect he has it on consignment so it's sale is really a 'no never mind' where he is concerned.

In the matter of the original post...I've given the matter over to Mike Eldred for investigation. Let's see what he comes up with.

Do not be surprised to learn that the entire process was randomized, with no rhyme or reason to neck build dates, body build dates, assembly dates, or serial numbers.

There was a lot of that 'shtick' at Fender in those years, and from our experience with the Gilmour last September with respect to serial numbers, it appears that the beat goes on.

Doc

Well Mike has set aside my suspicions. You'll find his remarks on his Forum as well as my reply. I await his response to same. We can take it from there.

I've noticed that guitar... the thing you have to remember with that particular seller is that dealing guitars through eBay appears to be his primary source of income (and a very good one, at that). He's basically an eBay store in all but name. He never needs to reduce his asking price for a quick sale -- sooner or later, someone will buy it. Some of the Dan Smith Strats he's got there have been there off and on for over a year now. Check his user comments and work out his average monthly turnover... he must be doing something right. My guess is that he appeals to buyers for whom cash isn't that much of an obstacle, but availability might be... or perhaps they're not into spending all their free time chasing up a bargain. Time still equals money for a lot of people...

Very interesting observations - what a business model!

It all catches up in the end. There is also someone who has a Lonestar Strat on fleabay listed for over a grand. He is honest about his description (it has a few flaws).I wish ebay would shut those guys down. They prey on the uninformed.

Same business model Bernie Madoff used for years.

I had taken a 3 year hiatus from ebay before going back in January. There were a lot of changes such as only buyers can leave a negative feedback which I think is unfair even though I am only a buyer. But guitar wise a lot has changed and I could write a book on how to buy on there now. Due to the economic crisis this is the best year you might ever see to buy gear. It is a shame but so many guys are selling there axes or parts of there collections because they have to make car, house, even medical payments. The power seller that you guys are talking about is from Australia one thing I found out is it is hard to get quality axes over there as I here a lot of them say that so I guess that is why his price is off the chart,as the guitar will probably sold local or to another country. That shipping price is just ridicules as a matter of fact it is the highest I have seen.First off you can get a Clapton mint in the low teens on ebay within a week. The thing with power sellers that deal strictly with guitars is they are going to be totally straight up and list every micro ding and flaw but there also going to ask for top dollar. It is no different than walking in a vintage guitar shop. You want to catch the guy who stopped playing ten years ago and wants to just sell his guitar. The good thing about Fenders is there are thousands of listings and if you put the time in you will get that great bargain and save a bundle like I did on a tele deluxe NOS and an Ash strat deluxe NOS that I saved $700 and $600 theres no way to beat that or resist it.But for smaller companies the power sellers kill it because there are not as many listings and people see what these guys are asking and follow there lead. But if you stay on what you want most likely you will get it at a great price. Hey we are all looking to get a great buy and I have nothing against anyone getting the most they can for what they have as long as they are being straight up .Just like the post where someone was mad at people parting guitars. I have no problem with that as we all need necks, pups, bridges whatever and Fender does not sell no necks so it helps people out. Its not like there buying them and setting them on fire. Hey I remember a while back Martian giving someone I beleive in Canada a part for his ax for nothing and I thought thats a good guy as I would do the same or Niki wanting to donate the money for his nuts to that sick boy I respect that. So though we dont physicaly know each other on the forum we kind of get to know each other and to me no other forum comes close to this one.
