Ijust bought a 04 MIM srat.Jst wondering if there was anyway you could adjust the tension of the whammy... I know you could take a spring off the back but need help figuring out which posts to attach the other springs to. I took the back cover off last night and it only has 3 of the 5 springs that im assuming were stock. Any info would be greatly appreciated. - Hillbilly

Why not take the middle spring out for now and move the ends that go to the trem claw of the 2 outer springs in one notch. Your going to have to readjust your trem claw though or your trems going to be a mile high. You could always unscrew the tremclaw a couple of turns on each screw.

niki's suggesting you try running with 2 springs. I've never tried that. Let us know how it compares.

Then maybe try to go with 5 (for grins and giggles) just to compare (and please report back, thank you).

I managed about an hour with one spring once. Not a pleasant experience. 2 springs used to be my usuall for floyd's and trem insanity. Now a days i like something to arm wrestle.

Actually, running three springs in the "empty-spring-spring-spring-empty" mode is more like running 2 springs because those 2 at an angle are working harder than the middle spring. You might try "spring-empty-spring-empty-spring" first to see if that feels any different/better.

Then try two. Then try 4. then try 5 to experience the whole range!

Then go back to whatever felt the best for you.

Thanks My brother!! Where do you get replacement springs? Maybe my local Fender dealer??? This is a great looking great playing pawn shop guitar and it only came with the three springs, so im wondering if u think the difference in feel would be worth the cost of the new springs...-Hillbilly

Springs cost pence/cents. Worth a quid to experiment? yep it is, in my mind.

And should you ever want to get your trem to behave like a fixed bridge without tightening screws or ramming bits of wood in it. You can just fit your two spare springs.

Shame your not in the uk ive got bags of the things.

Look at chuck berry stuff thats where i started 20 odd years ago. I think the first song i ever learnt was come on by chuckB its just F Dminor and C. If you look at a lot of early 50's pop some of it can be really easy as the instruments were still new. They weren't taking things to the extremes.
Remember relax with your rhythm playing. If all you do is develop a relaxed confident right hand and practice note/chord fingerings at this time you wont go far wrong. Keep to the rock and roll 3 chord stuff too.

All the best with it mate.
