I don't think it matters a heck of a lot either way.

I usually just buy what's on sale.

I disagree. Strings have allot to do with the tone of your guitar and also how it plays. I always use 10's, but try a variety of different strings on each guitar until I find the one's that sound and feel the best. Ernie Ball pure nickels are usually my choice, but not always. Dunlop's work well on my SG.

There are only a small handful of companies that actually manufacture strings. Fender is one of them. I've been using Fender strings for awhile now with really good results. Only thing I've noticed is the treble strings often look a bit discolored even when new.

My answer would be: Personal Preference.

I went from Fender Bullets to D'adarrio and what I found was the D'adarrios sounded brighter and were a little softer because I beleive they have less tension then the Bullets. I was after something a little more mellow so they did not suit my playing, but having said that there is a vast range of D'adarrios to choose from.

I think if you have the funds than you can try various brands if you are prepared to throw a new set of strings in the bin only to string your guitar up once again

I tried them once. I was very satisfied. I got 10 sets for $20!

I've tried a lot of brands over the years and, as I said above, I didn't develop a preference. YMMV of course.

I find a 45 degree twist of my tone controls to have a bigger effect on the tone. And to be honest, I really don't like the sound of brand new strings. I like 'em all a lot better after a couple hours of playing.

Strings are a personal choice. The real advantage in strings are what the strings are made of; i.e. nickle, steel, nickle plated, ect...

I have used GHS, D'Addario's, Elixer, Ernie Balls's, Dean Markley's, and Fender. For Fender guitars with the 6 point tremolos, I feel more comfortable using .009 Nickel Wound Bullets. On my old ESP LTD I used Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies .010's, on my BC Rich Warlock I used D'Addario .009's Nickle Wound. I do not remember any of the other guitars but used all these strings at one point or another.

I have to admit that I really like the Dean Markley Blue Steel's and Fender Bullet Nickle Wound's the most. The Elixer brand I was constantly changing for one reason or another and do not really like, IMO. All the rest were ok and would use them in a pinch.

Try as many as you can and decide which ones you like the best.

Actually, you answered your own question the best way it could have possibly been answered.

thanks for all your replys, I insatalled the D'ADDARIO strings & streched them out for an hour or so, the question I have now, what if I was color blind how would I be able to tell the string gage on the end of the colored ball, it could happen some people are colored blind, but I am not, is ther a dicrimation law suit lurking somwhere, if there is I want half (just kidding)

The wound strings are easy enough, just look at their thickness. For the plain strings, pinch the string in a half circle between thumb and first finger. The higher the pinching resistance the thicker the gauge. Compare all three against each other and you are ready to go.....

I use D'adarrio, they seem to be a little easier on the frets, as far as wear goes. At least it seems that way to me, but it could be my imagination.
