I have never been able to shake the heavy handedness in which I play. How about you? What's your style?

Clarification, by medium pick I mean medium attack or strum.

All three. Depends on the song, and what the dynamics call for. Sometimes I go from banging out notes as hard as I can to just barely being able to hear myself in the same song.

Good points. I guess I mean in general. Do you consider yourself a light touch or something more like SRV style or somewhere in between?

All three but most of the songs I like to play for my own enjoyment would fall into the medium group.

I believe the term is "Ham Fisted" in my case.

Using all three is important for dynamic and interesting playing.

On average though, my touch has got lighter over the years - as my necks will show.

It all depends on what I am playing, but I would generally call myseld a prettyhard picker. I use very heavy/thick picks too

I have an extremely light touch. So much so that as a point of reference, using a, "Blackface" Twin Reverb and 2 Celestions, most players' typical volume on 2 is my typical volume on 6.

I also use a combo thin/medium pick, .009 gauge string set and moderate output Strat pickups. I've always been this way and after 40 some odd years, I'm not going to be changing at this stage of the game.

I guess in general it depends on the guitar. On my Strat with .12's I'm usually going all out. On my Strat with .11's I have a much lighter touch.

My action is pretty high and use a heavier gauge strings, so its pretty natural for me to use heavy hands. I just like the tone of a fully resonating guitar from the strings to the wood. When I go out to purchase a new solid body, one of the first things I look for is the acoustic qualities of the guitar.

I used to be pretty heavy handed, breaking all the strings on my guitar at one time or another. But the last couple of years I have explored the other end of the spectrum, for whatever reason. If you want to get a good jazz tone, you really need to ease up on your picking. Now I'd say I'm pretty comfortable with both styles of playing.

I use a Dunlop Jazz III pick so I can try to BREAK MY STRINGS IF I CHOOSE.With the same pick I can lighten up as I see fit. A soft pick can't give you much past soft attack, can it?

I really cannot choose one because I use all three attacks. Different songs and/or song parts require you to play harder or softer depending on the mood of the song.

It all depends what your playing and how you feel. Gentle pieces need a light touch offcourse. But theres nothing better than to grab your strat especially after an arguement or feeling down and roughing the guitar up.
Aggresive lead playing in anger can sometimes help you discover and do things you would not normally do. Nice thread and pleased to meet you
